We are considering at trip to disneyland in august. We would go to disney, universal and then go see the musical Wicked. Since we would be doing a lot, we want to stay at a cheaper hotel near disneyland. What good neighbor hotel do you recommend that is a bit cheaper than the disney hotels but is still fairly quite and very close to disneyland.

umm, the only hotels ive been in when i go to disneyland, is the Hyatt Regency which is next to the Embassy Suites anaheim south, ive stayed at both and their both around 10 mins from disneyland. i dont know about cheap but this summer were paying $132 per night at the embassy. the only bad thing is that you have to pay for the shuttle to disneyland. that totally sucks cuz before it used to be free.

You don't mention how many people you will need accommodations for. If it's just two of you, I would recommmend the Candy Cane Inn. It is very close to DL, and is easy walking distance to the park (10 min). It is one of the few close by hotels that has its own dedicated shuttle that runs every 30 min.
They also offer a better than average cont. breakfast. You can get a room for around $100 per night with AAA. The pool area is small and nothing to write home about but the rooms are well appointed and I have heard the beds are extra comfy.

If you have kids traveling with you, I may change my answer, depending on their age. . .

In 95 I stayed at the Desert Inn and Suites, which is across the street from the entrance. I remember the service being really nice. In 2004 I stayed at the Howard Johnson hotel and that is only a block away from the entrance. I really liked it there and it has gotten GREAT reviews. Hilton Anaheim was nice when I took another trip in 2004, but it's two blocks away and would NOT be a comfortable walk if you missed the last shuttle.

I would look at Candy Cane. Never stayed there but it has mostly great reviews. You may want to see if you can even get ressie's at this later date.

Am going 7/29 thru 8/03 with my 15 year old daughter. When I called the Candy Cane Inn about rates, I was told by the reservationist there they do not honor AAA rates at that time as it is their "high" or "peak" season. Am still staying there though as it is just the two of us and right across from Disney. Also have heard many positive things about CCI's own shuttle, being clean and on time. They seem to be consistent in their high ratings, postive comments, and the service they provide.

We stayed at the Embassy Suites South in 2005 and loved it! Great breakfast and the happy hour was a nice little treat at the end of the day! I just had to comment on "Wicked" though. We saw it in Seattle last fall and absolutely loved it! I will go again if I am anywhere near it. You are probably aware of the music already but, in case you aren't, I would get the CD to listen to before the show... it just gets in your brain and you will be humming "Defying Gravity" and "The and I" for the next week. Enjoy.... I am jealous!

I also agree with the candy cane inn as I have read so many good reports on it from this board and other boards.
I have to comment on Wicked too! We saw it last week in London's West End, I have the CD in my car and can't stop singing "Popular"!!

We just got back from DL and we stayed at Portofino. It was nice, not expensive at all. We also have friends who stay at Candy Cane Resort and they like it. However my personal favorite is PP at DL.

We just booked to stay at Portofino Inn & Suites, for this September! We are paying $64 a night and on the last night we have to pay $72, we will be there for five nights. This will be our first time staying here, but it looks very nice and is one block away from Disneyland!

We just got back not too long ago & we stayed at the Candy Cane Inn. We loved it there & would recommend it. We loved how close it was to DL if we wanted to walk & for those days where our feet were a little sore, the shuttle was awesome!
We drove out to Universal as well. Had a blast there!

We have stayed at the Tropicana and the Carousel Inn, both are right across the road from DL literally a 5 min walk to the security check. Candy Cane is about a 15 to 20 min walk depending on your speed , they do have a free shuttle that runs every 30 min or so. Both of these hotels are cheaper than CC with bigger rooms, the CC rooms are very small. CC has excellent grounds and is family owned and operated and staff are generally very friendly, CC has a very loyal following but friends of ours who stayed there were very disappointed that the hotel did not live up to all the hype it has received on Travel Advisor and there have been many similar postings on TA along the same lines. Tropicana has a good pool complex with hot tub, Carousel Inn has a roof top pool which is a little small, CC has only a childrens wading pool.
CI had the best rate and the biggest rooms, both Trop and CI had fridges and Microwaves, CC had only fridges. Have heard good things about Howard Johnsons (about 10 min walk) and it too has a very loyal following, it is number 2 on TA but its reviews seem more real and balanced

There's isn't alot of parking at the Desert Inns and Suites so if you can get there early and leave the car I recommend that.

I stayed at CC last August. I thought the service was good and loved the proximity to the park, but ultimately thought it was overrated. The rooms are pretty small for the price.

This past April I stayed at Hyatt Regency and was VERY pleased. I got a priceline rate of $65 (plus you have to pay $15/day for parking). They are a little bit further away, but have a free shuttle that runs every 30 minutes (usually there are 2 that run so that everyone is taken care of).

If you can live with some uncertainty, I would try priceline for a 3-3.5 star hotel. I've had great luck!
