It just occurred to me that none of the WDW hotels have minibars. Is it to get people to go to the gift shop? I mean they charge way more from the minibar. They can easily be locked for families that don't want them, either the electronic or the manual ones - you can always refuse the key. Just thinking sometimes late at night in a hotel, I'd love some chips and a diet coke/cocktail without having to get out of my pjs. Does this have to do with Mousekeeping? Just curious if anyone knew why?

More likely to do with guests wanting to use the mini fridge for stuff they bring with them or buy while at WDW/Orlando. In the last 10 years the only minibars we have run into were at the Mirage and NYNY in Vegas. The beer, snacks and soda in their gift shops were cheaper than the minibar so we stopped there if wanted a night time snack

They are just trending away, it seems, everywhere.
Even over at Universal, they are removing the minibars that they do have for empty fridges.
I don't think it's very popular to pay $10 for a $1 coke or $1 bag of chips

I think its probably frequent business traveler bias then. I have noticed less of them, but they seem to be staying at the up market places. I thought with the markup they'd be an easy choice at Deluxes, but obviously, they're not there for a reason, but I bet you're right.
