Does anyone know what happens if you test positive before the flight back to Canada and cannot return home? I tried searching online for Florida state guidelines and cannot find anything.

I'm thinking of booking an apartment or a villa, as a backup plan to hunker down with my family until the 14 days has passed and we can fly home again. I've found a couple of places I can cancel up until the day before with no cancellation penalty.

ETA: This is for our trip in March, I am not currently positive in Florida...

Florida doesn’t have any guidelines. You are free to wander around maskless even if you do test positive. I’m not sure what the requirements are to get back into Canada. If you vacationed on the beach until you test negative does that work?

charmed59 is correct; if you test positive in Florida there are no guidelines as to where you can or can't stay. Seems booking an apartment or a villa as a backup plan is a fine option.

So would you be able to rent a car and drive home to Canada?
In theory, yes. However with the rental car shortages you'll be hard-pressed to find a one-way rental to a Canadian destination. I spent some time working on this strategy with no luck.

For what it's worth, Florida's Covid numbers have absolutely plummeted over the last several weeks and continue to do so. Obviously, that could change by next March.

I was just in Florida for 2 Weeks ...and shocker, I did not get Covid! (also vaccinated, wore a mask in indoor locations) I didn't worry about making back up plans, just went in thinking that the test before I came home would be negative. (I also went twice pre-vaccination - and also, did not get Covid)

I would def not be over worrying but having a back up u can cancel is good.
just had friends on a cruise, adult daughter tested positive upon their return. The whole family grabbed a hotel and decided to make the most of it. Thankfully a break thru case, no real issues just Xtra vacation.
safe travels and Enjoy!

If one does test positive while on vacation, do you just keep testing every other day or so until you test negative, then come home?

Curious about this as well.

Also, if one person in the fully vaccinated family tests positive and the entire family stays back for the 14 days, etc., what if another family member subsequently tests positive and then the family has to stay back for another 14 days? These are the thoughts I‘m having as I seriously doubt we can do our March break trip as long as there is a testing requirement for re-entry.

Did they stay 14 days? Or until she got a negative test?

My understanding is that you wait min 14 days and once no longer have any symptoms you need a doctor’s note you’ve had covid recently, recovered & so your test will be positive when you fly.
Testing every other day won’t help as I think you continue to test positive for many many days (90?)
This is what I was told, but I’m going to see if I can find anything to confirm.
Edited to add: found info in government links - see below.

Both these links say you can come in with a positive covid test if you’ve recently recovered from it, it looks like the US needs a dr. Note:

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/testing-international-air-travelers.html
https://travel.gc.ca/travel-covid/t...ovid-19-testing-travellers-coming-into-canada
specifically for entry to Canada:
Pre-entry test result requirements
All travellers 5 years of age or older, regardless of citizenship or vaccination status, must provide proof of a COVID-19 negative molecular test result to enter Canada or proof of a previous positive test result taken between 14 and 180 days.

I don’t know if the airlines themselves won’t accept proof of a positive test no matter what? I think they follow the government guidelines, but not sure.

My understanding is you just need a negative covid test to be able to fly.

"Airlines will refuse boarding to travellers who are unable to provide a valid negative molecular test result or proof of a previous positive test result taken between 14 and 180 days that includes"

I also read this, and understood that we could fly home 14 days after testing positive (we wouldn't fly if we had any symptoms tho)

With the opening of the border I would fly from a US airport to Orlando and back. Get the test results after you land in Buffalo, Detroit, etc. Drive across the border and quarantine at home if positive. Obviously very Ontario centric and not an option for many.
