Hotel/Food suggestions near Balboa Park/San Diego Zoo

We are going to SD for 3 days, 2 nights right after our Disneyland trip in January. Does anyone have a suggestion for a cheaper hotel near the park? It looks like we want to spend most of those 3 days in the BP and the zoo, and venture away from that area a couple times at most (we haven't decided for sure whether we are going to SW yet).

Any suggestions for food in the area is appreciated too.
