I just saw this on CNN (.com):

Hot Toys for 2010

Several have already been talked about here on the Budget Board (Squinkies and Zoobles), but there were several others, including a couple of boys items, that look pretty cool.

And if anyone wants to rent my DD's services - I swear that she picks the "hot" toy every year in August, before any official predicting is done. We walked through the toy section a few weeks ago and she immediately wanted Zoobles, Squinkies, and Monster High dolls.

Interesting list. I got my DD a squinkie, and I really am disappointed. It's small and easily lost. I feel like we bought the pack for a tiny little .50 cent princess. Oh well. Squikies aren't getting anymore of my money. Also, I told DD that she wasn't getting any of those Monster High girls. They aren't dressed in what I consider appropriate for a 5 year old. I do like the princess dolls, though.

I saw the princess dolls last weekend. Ariel is FREAKY looking. She looks normal in the picture, but go see the doll in person. She's got these freakish huge collagen Angelina Jolie lips and wierd looking face overall...

I think we're getting dd the Vsmile Explorer.

I think that Vtech reader looks interesting. My boys want Paper Jamz, but I'm not sure I do. I already bought the Deluxe Real Construction set for my 6yo, the only concern I have about it is that I read in reviews that the instructions aren't specific and don't include measurements for the wood, but I think we can deal with that.

My DD loves the Monster High dolls. They are super hard to find right now unless you want the 2 pack.
The Princess dolls we saw this weekend and she fell in love with them, but of course she wants all the stuff that comes with them. By the time I added 1 doll, PJs, dress (for the doll), bed, cabinet and tea set from toysrus I was up to over 300 bucks...ouch big dent in the budget. They are really cute though

DS really wants those Kung Zu hamsters but I just can't do it. We are getting him a netbook or laptop for his birthday (early December) and we do Hanukkah gifts 1 a night for 8 nights so we wrap 'em all and put 'em in a pile and he picks one at random. Some are bigger ticket things like DS games or book sets; others will be something small like a puzzle or mini-Lego set. This year he is very into those new Lego games which you have to build before playing. We put three on his wish list.

For DD we are giving her a Tag Jr. for her birthday in October so we will get her some games for it, a dress-up Monkey, and a Melissa & Doug shopping cart (real metal). Grandma already gave us $ to get her a play kitchen we wanted, and we've been stockpiling things throughout the year so I actually think we're almost done with her.

I completely agree!!! The lips are terrible. I was wondering if they actually showed these dolls to Moms before they put them in production. If it weren't for the big lips I would have bought them! I guess we'll stick to American Girl Dolls :)

I am a little disappointed with what is hot this year. Nothing really great stands out to me. Maybe that's good though I won't have to look very hard for what they do want.

I'm so glad I picked up those squinkies already. Not that I think there is anything about them that would make them a hot toy this year :)

I really don't think the Monster High dolls are AIMED to a 5 year old. Even though the CNN article says 6+, I would say the aim for those are closer to preteen.

For those interested, here is the Monster High Music Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGawAhRjtoA

They have done a whole youtube/facebook marketing campaign on these.

I bought some squinkies for my 8 yo niece already, and I have already purchased two of those Lego boardgames at least a month ago. Other than that, the only thing on the CNN list that would appeal to my children is the Scrabble Flash game (my 13 year old pointed out the commercial to me yesterday), so I need to pick that up next.

Oh, and I need to look for Pillow Pals if I can ever get to a store without my children.

They are very creepy!!! Ariel's the worst.

I have a 'thing' about dolls. Back when I was pregnant with dd I told everyone if they want to buy her a doll they MUST show it to me first before buying it, because if I find it creepy it won't be staying in my house... sounds rude, but I'm sorry I don't like certain looking dolls (like :scared1: that thing is in my house, I'm scared!!)... thankfully everyone's been very good about it.

I am so glad that I won't be chasing around toys this year like the ZhuZhu's last year. My daughter is going to be 10 and wants one of the Monster High Dolls but I am going to get it this week for her birthday. We are getting out of the ages of toys and they are not interested in any of the other hot toys.

I would agree that they would be most appropriate for a preteen, except that my 11 year old and all her friends gave up dolls at least two years ago. If that's who they are targeting there should be plenty on the clearance racks in my town after Christmas.

Thanks for the heads up! I already picked up a few Zoobles based on posts here. DD10 loves her LPS so I think she'll like those, trying to resist the accessories though. I just got her a lego beach house so the lego board game would be perfect for DS. I think the other things they can live without but it's good to read about them so I know a little bit in case they mention one.

Not rude at all! We all have our "thing"! I would not have a creepy doll in my house - it would probably magically disappear!

I agree. My almost-8 year old is all about some Monster High though. She has an October birthday and loves everything about Halloween. Her party this year will have a Monster High theme.
