Prisoners of love - Web site offers captive dates By Rosalind Russell
Mon Feb 12, 11:49 AM ET

BANGKOK, Feb 12 (Reuters Life!) - Still searching for a Valentine's date? Have a penchant for muscular torsos, crew cuts and tattoos?

Then hotprisonpals.com is the Web site for you.

These guys won't appear on your doorstep with a rose between their teeth, whisk you off for a fancy dinner or lavish you with kisses.

But some of America's most desirable felons are lining up to send you love letters, poems and even proposals of marriage.

Look at it as an investment for the future. Many of the prisoners, like Keith Virgil Dunaway, posing topless in blue jeans, are due for release this year.

If Randy Sands in Florida takes your fancy, you'll have to wait a little longer for that first embrace. Due for release in 2023, he's looking for an easy going, open-minded woman over 30.

The idea for hotprisonpals.com came from New York pop artist Sam Wagner, who began writing to a friend in jail several years ago. The prisoner then asked Wagner to write to his cellmate who had stopped receiving letters from his family.

Requests for letters from lonely prisoners kept coming, until Wagner was sending a monthly letter to more than 100 inmates.

With no access to the Internet, letters are often the only contact U.S. prisoners have with the outside world.

"Prisoners have real abandonment issues. Friends and family often stop writing after a couple of years," said Wagner's business partner, Jason Rupp, who built the Web site in 2003.

"The letters they get through the site are crucial to their well being. They need to know someone on the outside cares."

MURDERERS AND RAPISTS

Inmates, both heterosexual and gay, pay $19 to post their photograph and a short note on the site. Women inmates are also invited to join hotprisonpals, but none has applied so far.

"We don't require that prisoners say what crime they committed," said Rupp, a 30-year-old photographer who runs the site from his home in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

"We take everybody. If they are murderers or rapists they are not going to put that in the ad."

"HOT" is the one-word message posted by Tommy DeWayne Cox, posing in tight swimming shorts and one of the site's most popular inmates.

"Sometimes the messages get a little racy and we like that," said Rupp. "We pride ourselves on having the hottest prisoners on the Internet."

Pen pal friendships often lead to prison visits and serious long-term relationships.

The prison marriage of Erik Menendez -- convicted with his brother Lyle of the 1989 murder of his wealthy parents in Beverly Hills -- has helped generate interest in prisoner dating.

Menendez married a woman with whom he had corresponded for years from jail. A book by his wife Tammi, "They Said We'd Never Make It," heavily romanticizes the unconsummated relationship.

"It's a thrill for women. These are good looking guys and they can seem really exotic from the outside," said Rupp. "It's a fantasy. You don't see any of their flaws."

If you're still interested, Adrian, Jarvis, Jason and LaRon are waiting for your letters.

"We have scoured the prison floors and checked each bunk bed, both top and bottom, looking for the men that you have dreamed about," the site says. "Don't have a Valentine yet? Well you do now! Happy Valentine's day!!!"

I am suppossed to head to a women's prison for a class tomorrow..we all found it incredibly ironic we were visiting a women's prison on valentine's day. I am sure the last thing these prisoners want to do is talk to a group of college students on the day of love lol
I have seen articles on websites like this. Some women marry hardcore murderers and some very well known ones.
The mother who drowned her two boys in a car had an ad and got so much attention the website had to take it down.

I mean I can see the intention of wnting them to have letters but my gosh, they are in PRISON FOR A REASON!! To fall in love with an ex murderer! dude seriously, how would you sleep at night..lol

You know, I really don't like that they don't tell you what the guys did to get in prison. It could be someone that was charged with murder from child molesters and rapists, murders.

I guess if you are interested in something like that, you could just ask them.

Imagine him showing up at your door when he gets out. No thanks.

Reading through some of the profiles is real interesting. Many are good for a laugh. Like breaking and entering and assualt is not a big thing?

Ironically enough though, many woman find something attactive about corresponding and having a romantic relationship with someone behind bars.

I have a coworker who got married to a guy she met behind bars. He is in for murder and I believe still has another 15 years or so to go on his sentence.

Was your coworker behind bars? If not, how did she meet him?
Is she really "in love?"
I cannot even imagine people falling in love with a criminal that they know has murdered, molested a child, etc.

I used to sort incoming and outgoing mail for a prison.

Many letters going out have very beautifully intricate detailed drawings of roses and other romantic symbols, but from the same prisoner to multiple women.
Some of the inmates pay the other inmates to draw or write letters for them to all the women they correspond with. Then they end up getting many women to send them financial aid. Evey last woman will swear to you he loves only her and would NEVER take advantage of her.

It was really sad.

That's scary! What if you hooked up with a murderer, who killed you when he got out! This is definitely bad news and bad business.

She was not in prison herself. Her sisters boyfriend ended up there for about 6 months or so and he met him and thought that he would be perfect for her.

Her sister got her to come to the prison to meet him and they hit it off. She continued to visit him on a regular basis till he eventually proposed. They got married in the prison a about 4 or 5 years ago. She seems to really love him and is working with his lawyers on his appeal.

I think he was sentenced 20 to life for the murder. She knows that she will not live a "normal married life" for a long time and is fine with that and with the possibility of never having children with him.

It's one thing to fall in love with someone, marry them and then something happens and they end up there for some time. But I just don't think I could ever seek someone out who was already in prison and start a relationship from there. Visiting days just wouldn't be enough for me. I would want to be able to see them at anytime and talk to them on the phone anytime.

Not to mention the things that happened to land them there. How could you really know the truth behind what happened?

Oh and here's another little tidbit to the future prisoners out there who may find themselves posting profiles on hotprisonguys or whatever.

DON'T USE YOUR MUGSHOT AS YOUR PROFILE PHOTO!!! :rotfl:

Not a good way to attracted someone. Maybe a more candid shot would be in order.:confused3

Ironically, if you are dealing with a life-term prisoner, it's the ultimate "safe" relationship because the woman will never have to deal with this person in a real life setting. The relationship can exist as pure projection fantasy.

The woman can convince herself that her love will change him, a theory which won't be tested if the guy never gets out.

Yes, it appeals to women with very adolescent or stunted ideas of what a romantic relationship is.

I'm going to have to check that site out when I get home. Sounds.....interesting to say the least.

Imagine him showing up at your door when he gets out. No thanks.

I'll go an extra step, imagine whenhe gets out, shows up at your door, and you really werent all that serious, (i guess right back in he goes after he murders you)....
i mean seriously, i have to agree that itd be one thing if you are already married and something happened, I could think of a few things that wouldn't be horrible to end a relationship, but meeting someone already there had creepy all over it!!

okay :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: I can't stop looking at the profiles. I'm sure many of them aren't "bad" guys and may actually lead straight and fruitful lifes when they get out.

However, some of them.......:crazy2: The things they say are cracking me up.

One guy is in his 30's is in till 2029 and says that he is financially comfortable. I just don't understand that. Where is all this money, how did he get it and how did the lawyers not get it all? ;)

I couldn't do it!!!!!!!

What a thoughtful guy that sister has :rotfl:

that website is now in my favorites. if anything have a boyfriend or girlfriend in prison could add to my street cred.

Darn it, I really wish I knew about this before I hooked up with my DW. I always tell her why can't you be more like ____ a missing tooth crack ***** whacko that stabbed her husband with an icepick.:lmao:
