Our dining review . . .
Cast of 4 all adults, 2 couples.
All prices below are for the food listed, usually to feed 1 couple. Price includes tax, but not tip.
Sun. Aug. 18:
Drove in. Breakfast and lunch on the road.
Dinner Jiko
4 stars! This was fabulous, once again. We arrived at sunset Sun. evening by car from PO-FQ. You do have to pay $6 for valet here. The resort is as beautiful as ever and the lobby was very busy, as was Boma. However, Jiko was quiet. We asked the CM if we could spend time looking around the resort first, as Jimmy and Lindsey were new to the place. The animals were mostly very hidden or quiet. Only saw 1 giraffe. Anyway, we took our time getting to the restaurant, but were seated immediately. Tommi was our server and she was great! Been there since the restaurant opened (when we visited the first week they were open). Tommi was very helpful and informative with the wine and menu items. She told us that some items like the marinated Ahi tuna appetizer have been altered slightly because they have a new chef (see Disney Magazine fall 2002 article). Anyway, we were somewhat disappointed in the tuna as a result. Previously it was marinated in a vinaigrette, much more Asian flavors and tangy. Not anymore. It now has barley and beans and hummus. Unusual, still good, but not as good as the first version. Alan had the smoked bacon and onion flatbread. Yummy. For entrees we chose the pan roasted monkfish and the Duck Confit and grilled Duck Sausage. The duck is unchanged, and still fantastic. The monkfish is a huge portion, pan fried (not roasted) and the vegetables and butter sauce were better than the fish. Parsnips were a nice addition. We split a bottle of wine with the entrees. Tommi let us taste a number of wines while selecting, made suggestions, described South African varieties, and even gave us phone numbers and web sites for ordering the wines we tasted. She encouraged us to share the tastes, passing around each glass, and made sure to remind us not to leave any unfinished glass on the table, as it is bad luck. Also, the last glass of our bottle was full of sediment. Not only did she notice when she removed Jimmys glass, but she appeared later with a fresh glass from a new bottle. Very nice! We finished the meal with the Walts Gala Apple crumble and Black mission fig napoleon. The figs dish is VERY strong in flavors. The apple dish is very good. Alan also had a glass of sambuca. For 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 deserts, ½ bottle wine and 1 sambuca the total was around $100 (lost receipt, sorry).
Mon., Aug. 19:
Breakfast POFQ food court (milk). I had breakfast snacks in the room. I would suggest buying the ½ gallon milk from the gift shops rather than milk in the food court. 1 pint was $1.05, while the ½ gallon lasted me all week and was only $3. Also, if you are a coffee drinker, get the refillable mug for around $10. Each regular coffee was around $2. Our friends enjoyed the muffins from the POFQ food court every morning.
Lunch Pure and Simple at Wonders of Life
We enjoyed the turkey wrap and fruit cup. The combo comes with chips, and they wouldnt substitute fruit, so we got the wrap by itself and added a fruit cup. We split these and it was plenty of food to hold us until our late afternoon PS. The service was slow here, but food was very good. Nice and quiet even in the middle of the day. 3 stars.
Dinner Biergarten
We arrived late for our 3:45 lunch PS (caught by the China drawbridge in the POURING rain). At 4pm the hostess still seated us for lunch and we paid the lunch price. I think she pitied us. My husband was drenched. Brigit was our server, and was so nice. She brought out towels for the guys (who had refused to buy ponchos) and gave us plenty of time to get settled). I was much more pleased with the food here this time. We have been every visit, and I usually think it is just ok. This was really good. Maybe they had already put out the dinner items. A perfect place for any meat and potatoes man, but plenty of yummy cold vegetable items too. Couldnt tell you everything we ate. Bratwurst, meatballs, rotisserie chicken, salmon, hot slaw, roasted potatoes, cold potato salad, cucumber salad, raisin salad, black forest cake, apple streusel, and much more. Get the small beer unless you want to sit for a LONG time. The large is about a quart. The small is half that. For 2 lunches, and 1 small beer the total was $36.54. The entertainment started at 4:25pm, and was very good too. 4 stars!
Tues., Aug. 20:
Lunch Rosies All American at MGM
Alan had chicken strips and fries. I chose the cheeseburger. Just ok. We really didnt enjoy the burger and fries type food that we had this trip. There are so many other better choices available, and it was just too hot for fried food. The dining area here is nice, unless its raining. Then everyone runs for cover and stares at you because you actually have a covered table. $12.91 with 1 small coke. 1 star.
Dinner POFQ food court
I really like the setup here better than before, although I dont think the choices are much different. 5 windows: Baked items and ice cream; Soups, salads, cold sandwiches; Daily specials and Cajun entrees; Hot dogs, hamburger, fries; Pasta and pizza. I had the chicken jambalaya and Alan had ribs. About $7-8 for each. Also, they serve bottled beer, wine coolers, juices, milk, yogurt, fruit, chips, jello and pudding. The hot entrees were pretty good, but not homemade tasting by any means. The ribs came with mashed potatoes, green beans and a roll. All in all pretty tasty. We sat outside and enjoyed that. I added a $6.50 frozen margarita from the pool bar. John the bartender is very good, and was there our entire trip. Remembered our names everyday and tried to help Alan find a beer he likes. They no longer serve Dixie beers at POFQ or Pleasure Island. 2 stars!
Wed., Aug. 21:
Breakfast Kona Café
We still love this place. It was very easy to drive our car to the Poly for drop off of our friends. Then I parked at the TTC in the 2nd row of cars! This was at 8:15am for a 9am MK opening. Walk to the Poly took less than 5 min. Our friends shopped for Stitch items, then we went upstairs. They seated us immediately. The Kona coffee in the press pot was the best coffee all week. Alan and I split one. We each had a Tonga toast. Better than I remember. Everything was quick and efficient and the servers, especially Beverly, were super nice. We were done with our 8:30 PS by 9:30 and on our way to the monorail. I must say that the coffee and sugar in the toast more than make up for any problems with waking early. We had a caffeine/sugar rush pretty quickly. 4stars!
Lunch Columbia Harbor House at the MK
Once again we had nice CMs. I ordered combo #1 with carrots, thinking it was fish only. It was actually fish and chicken. They almost argued with me when they realized it wasnt what I really wanted, trying to give it to me AND make more fish for me, too. Do you have someone who can eat the chicken? Is it ok that the fish touched the chicken? Ill order a new item for you. I told them it was fine and not necessary at all to make more. Alan and I split the combo and had 1 coke. Dont remember the price. The fish was great. We sat upstairs away from the noise. Just wish they had cocktail sauce. 2 stars!
Dinner Artist Point at Wilderness Lodge
Valet cost $6 here also, even for dining. I really dont like this new policy. PS at 6:30, and we were seated immediately. Our service here was rushed and not as good as other seated dining. For that reason I wont mention the CMs name. For appetizer Alan had Jack and water, I enjoyed the field greens with goat cheese toast and balsamic chive dressing. The lettuce was very fresh and crispy, despite being tossed with just the right amount of dressing. I really liked the goat cheese toast. They served wonderful sourdough with the meal, too. For our entrée, Alan chose the mixed grill. Oh my! It was delicious with lamb chop (good), venison (perfectly cooked) and rabbit sausage (YUMMY!!!!). I had the Cedar plank salmon. I was disappointed. Not as good as I remember, but that was our honeymoon, a fantastic table and a great server. Also, I havent been enjoying salmon lately anyway. Perhaps it was me and not the food. It was very light because it was served with a fennel salad and great asparagus. We each had the wine pairing. I didnt appreciate that the server brought my wine with the appetizer in an attempt to sell me more than one glass (at $11 a glass). I had to hold on to it until the salmon arrived, and by then it was a little too warm, but still good. For dessert, we ordered a flourless chocolate whiskey cake with pecans and raspberry sorbet, to share. Alan also had a glass of amaretto. The cake was incredible and perfect for those who love the chocolate-raspberry combination. The richness and texture were just right, not overpowering. We did have an incident with the dessert. The food runner brought out 4 desserts rather that 2 for the table (each couple was sharing). We told her we only ordered 2. About that time our server arrived to say we only had 2. She argued with him VERY loudly, laughing obnoxiously and saying well it was your mistake so now you have 4 while holding the plates over our heads. Finally he said to us that we had 2 extra desserts on the house, they served them, and walked away arguing loudly! They each returned to the table at one point or another to point out the others mistake. We found this to be totally inappropriate behavior. We didnt punish the server in the tip since he didnt bill us and tried to apologize, sort of. However, we couldnt believe that a place that is so proper and tries to maintain a certain atmosphere would put up with this kind of service. We didnt do any complaining so as not to ruin our meal, but this incident combined with the hurried service and disappointing salmon places it on the no need to do again list. 3 stars for food quality. Our total before tip for the 2 of us was $116.23.
Thurs., Aug. 22:
Lunch POFQ food court. I was saving room for dinner, so I had the chicken gumbo and fruit cup with a margarita from the pool bar. I really liked the gumbo. 2 stars.
Dinner California Grill
Once again, $6 for valet at the Contemporary. We arrived at 7:45 for our PS. There was a 10 min wait, perfect for viewing a spectacular sunset over the MK from the deck outside! Wow what a meal. I cant describe how nice it is to go back here on each trip and top the meal before. We have never been disappointed here with any aspect of the dining experience! This was no exception. Dinner was a gift from Alans employer, so the price is for the whole table, and Ill try to describe everything. We were seated almost at the furthest table from the entrance. It was a round booth like table with 2 chairs on the outside. We could see the pastry chefs perfectly and the wine room. This part of the restaurant is much quieter. Seeing out the window is a bit difficult, so we walked to the deck at fireworks time. However, there are decks on this end of the room too, and we could see the Chinese theater at MGM as well as Spaceship Earth. Very good location. We started with a sushi platter of 12 items. I believe it was Yoshies deluxe sushi platter. Yum! We had nigiri: octopus, snapper (melt in your mouth!), yellowfin tuna (citrussy!), Ahi tuna, shrimp, and salmon. Also maki: 2 pieces each of California roll, tuna roll (2 kinds of tuna) and shrinp roll. We enjoyed this tremendously!!! Also, our server Eden, was fantastic in recommending the appetizers as well as pairing the wine. She let us taste a couple of whites to go with the sushi. The sushi was superb! Very fresh, tasty and the pieces were large. Not knowing the time, we had also ordered the Triple cheese, triple garlic, sun-dried tomato and oregano flatbread. It had to sit at the table through the fireworks, but they covered the platter for us. We did join the folks on the deck outside to watch the fireworks. Very nice as usual! This time the music seemed better in sync with the show and was loud enough to hear. We returned to the table and enjoyed the flatbread. It was enough for 4 people to have 2 small pieces each. Very rich. Were going all out here, so we ordered more appetizers to share. First, a whole tuna roll (8 pieces) since we liked it so well. Then 2 items of the Sonoma goat cheese ravioli first course. Wow! The broth is rich and mushroomy, and the cheese ravioli very creamy. We finally each (all 4!) ordered the Grilled Pork tenderloin with creamy polenta and cremini mushrooms in zinfandel glaze. I will DIE if they ever remove this from the menu. It is my all time favorite. No wonder it is pictured on their wall of fame by the restrooms and featured in Cooking with Mickey. Im so glad I have the cookbook. Eden was nice enough to help Alan choose this wine, too. She was very helpful in tasting more than one, and didnt squirm when we had trouble finding something we liked. Eden was a great waitress, very friendly. We were visited by the manager at one point to see if everything was ok. Later he asked again on our way out. These people know service! For dessert, we had 1 frangelico and 3 coffees. Also, butterscotch crème brulee (very rich, large portion), chocolate peppermint ice cream in profiteroles with hot fudge and mint sauces (so chocolatey, but minty too. Fantastic). I had orange crepes with a custard filling, raspberry coulis and raspberries and blueberries. The best dessert Ive ever had here!!! I cannot rave about this meal enough. I consider it well priced at $307.93 for 2 bottles of wine, 1 cordial, 3 coffees, 4 entrees, 2 first course, 2 sushi items, 4 desserts and 1 flatbread. Easily 5 STARS!!!!!! My hats off to Eden and the rest of the staff. What a memorable evening.
Fri., Aug. 23:
Lunch Tusker House at AK
The meal ticket program at AK is a bargain. For $10.99 you get 3 coupons: 1 for a counter service entrée with large drink, 1 for ice cream bar or popcorn and 1 for bottled drink or water. I think we saved $5-6 per person by doing this. We both had the peanut chicken here. I really like having the rice and veggies with it. Also, the atmosphere is nice, and the air conditioning great since it was sweltering on Fri! 3 stars!
Dinner POFQ food court. Gumbo and a very good chicken Caesar salad. Made to order. $12 with root beer and 1 bag of chips. 2 stars!
We really had a great dining experience. I would skip Rosies and Artist Point next time. Everything else was good or phenomenal. Also, There are some good deals out there, especially if you share or get snack type items. To me the fine dining is more reasonably priced for what you get, despite being expensive. The AK coupon deal is a great idea for every park in my opinion. We only skipped 2 PS. One at Hollywood Brown Derby and one at Boma. Maybe next time.
Id be happy to answer questions! Thanks for reading! Counting the days till we can go again . . .
