A good friend invited me to her New Years Eve party. Her and her husband have been great to DD and I during Dh's deployment this year. Last year I gave them a nice bottle of wine, but I'd like to do something different this year. My budget is limited to $20 give or take.

Something to brighten the house after the holidays, like a plant or pretty flower arrangement in a nice vase. Nice mugs with their favorite coffee, tea or hot chocolate mix. A few dvd's with microwave popcorn.

I'd avoid pastries or chocoates, after the holidays, most people are overdosed on sweets. At least I am! ;)

Do you have a HomeGoods store near you? I was just at my local store and I saw some AMAZING vases that look like they cost at least $50 for under $20! Maybe a cute pair of bookends, a cheese board and knife, some nice soaps from a specialty soap store, fancy napkin rings, some nice wine glasses, a nice photo album, some nice hand towels..

Cracker Barrel has a nice gift that they've made up in a cello bag and bow...a box of their pancake mix and a bottle of their pancake syrup. Got it on sale for around $10.50. Another one has the mix, syrup, and a bag of their ground coffee for around $16.50. Makes a nice gift.

Take a ride to Target and make up a themed basket. You can usually do pretty well there from a cost standpoint:

In the past I have done:

~coffee basket ( 2 mugs, fancy coffee, chocolate dipped spoons, a cute sugar/creamer set)
~spaghetti dinner (colander, sauce, pound of spaghetti, parmesan cheese, cheese grater)
~sports theme - if you happen to know they are a fan of a specific sport or team
~garden basket - flowerpot with seeds, gardening gloves, a little hoe, hand lotion, a small shovel, some spring bulbs
~"Let It Snow" basket - mittens, hot chocolate, a couple of cute mugs (maybe with a snowflake or snowman design), mini marshmallows, a DVD (to watch on a snowy day), some yummy cookies

A flying screaming monkey always makes a nice gift.

A nice flameless candle from Target in a pretty gift bag with some Lindor Truffles and a bottle of bubbly for the New Year.

Does Cracker Barrel have good sales after the holidays? Our just opened here in November and I've only been once cause it is always packed.

Great basket ideas!!!!:thumbsup2

I have a really budget one that I fall back on alot which is one or two packages of cocktail napkins tied with a pretty ribbon. Either in pretty designs or clever sayings. One of my favorites, "Wine is God's way of saying He loves us and wants us to be happy."

Yes, they do but they also start discounting before the holidays. It's always packed in there - no matter which one I go to, it's busy.
