"Hostel" & "Match Point" - Saw them both

"Hostel" was interesting. Not nearly as gory as they made it out to sound. My wife HATED it. She doesn't like sex in any movie, and there was quite a bit of it. I enjoyed the movie. It was very tongue-in-cheek to me. Quite over the top, but fun all the same.

"Match Point" is weird. Not the movie, but it's effect afterwards. It's one of those movies that sticks with you after you see it. I didn't think that would happen with it. It keeps you guessing until the end. It's in a way, somewhat like "Fatal Attraction", except you can sort of understand the guy's attraction to the female a bit more. I mean, we're talking Scarlett Johansson here. Anyways, if nothing else, it will leave you with much to think about and much to discuss.

I saw the preview for Hostel and I have to say that it really disturbs me!! I just don't understand what in God's name some of the filmakers are thinking...why would you want to make a movie so gruesome...so cruel....I see the trend in movies has been to push the envelope more and more. I only shudder to think of what they will be like when my children are grown. There aren't many movies out there anymore that are worth my time or my money.

OK, I'll be quiet now...I also annoy my kids when I go off like this!!

Shocked, yes..........grossed out beyond belief..............NO!

I like horror movies...the kind with funky monsters or ghosts...things like that. When the movie shows things that COULD happen in real life...and the news will show that it DOES happen, it just becomes too much. You can not say that someone, with severe mental issues, would watch something like this and not get ideas!! Heck, remember that man who shot President Reagan...didn't he get the idea from a movie?? Movie makers have to be more responsible and realize that they could very well have serious negative impact on people's lives. (Can you tell that this is a VERY touchy subject with me?? )

Yeah, I don't know. It's hard for me to think in those terms only because I've been watching "R" rated films since I was about 10 years old, and never had one affect me like that. It's just a movie. If someone is truly mentally ill enough to have a film influence their behavior, they're going to do something wrong regardless if a film like that is made or not.

Yes, they might do something "wrong", but would it put ideas in their head about doing something "specific"?? I think that many of today's young people are simply numb to some of the horrific things that happen in real life because they see so much of it in the movies (and more and more on tv shows) that they are immune to it. It just doesn't phase them anymore. When I was a kid (and I am not THAT old - 41 isn't ancient!!) if you heard someone say anything harder that h%$# or d @$#, it HAD shock value...you just really didn't hear the language that you hear when you are just walking down the street. Kids just don't think anything about saying F--- or calling girls names that start with B or W. They don't see that it's wrong anymore. If film makers continue to getaway with pushing the envelope more and more, and people continue to want to be "shocked", how far will they really go?

I agree! If you ask me, the filmmakers have got to be somewhat demented in the brain.

I didn't see Saw 2...but I didn't think Saw (1) was all that gruesome.

of course - I watched it at home on a bright sunny afternoon! heheh It was more of a 'screw with your mind' movie then visual gore IMO

Agreed about Saw I. Saw II was worse on the gore level. In fact IMO it lost the some of the "mind " element in the process. Still worth seeing IMO.

I didn't think Saw 1 was gruesome at all. Saw 2 was a bit more though.
A few friends of mine saw Hostel over the weekend and thought it would have been better marketed as a "skinemax" movie. To the point where both of them, despite being huge horror/slasher movie fans, were uncomfortable by the amount of gratuitous sex and torture.

We saw Hostel over the weekend & I am adding it to one of the worst movies I have ever seen!!!!!! OK I think i would rather watch Napolean Dynamite 10 times in row than to see that movie again!!!! I was like soft porn meets a cheep Friday the 13th.... VERY predictable!

I personally enjoy horror movies. Saw was one of my favorites last year, and I am looking forward to seeing Hostel. If you don't like the idea of it, then don't watch it.

I grew up watching horror movies - they didn't give me any violent tendencies - I am actually very sweet.

Movies don't turn people into killers.

I too am a BIG Horror movie fan but this was a huge waste of film...But then again it's just my opinion.
