Hospitals in Orlando area with specialty in neurology (neurosurgery)

OK, looking for a bit of help from mostly those living/having lived in or around Orlando area and perhaps the unlucky few that ran into this during a trip down. I'm trying to find out which hospital(s) in the area specializes in neurology and secondly neurosurgery. If it makes a difference, we're mainly looking with regards to anuerysms, brain bleed, TIA and seizure. With "area" I'm not too worried about it being like as close as can be, if it happens to be that a top center is 30 minutes from WDW and you'ld go by 5 other hospitals on the way, that's fine with me too situation permitting. (one way or another, doc wants to know anyway in case it ended up being needed as back up)

Looks like my october trip probably will end up rescheduled. Will have to have a procedure done, but first need to finish my phsyical rehab to get in a best possible shape before they knock me down again. Rehab wont be done until at least summer or later, so good odds the procedure and recoup of it will run right through the planned trip. OK, can happen. Whether or not I end up lucky enough that it can go ahead as scheduled or end up going at a later time after the procedure, my specialist has already given me quite a list of rules and things to be put in place for travel. Fine by me, small price to pay to go. One of those things is getting our homework done on knowing where to go if need be. He'll be also looking into it using his network, but as he stated -and I agree-; "I'll be getting a coloured opinion and thus might miss something. Those with experience there can have a very different opinion and also don't always know all. Put the 2 together and we might just be able to come to a best-as-can-be list of options."

So let's here it; which hospital(s) is/are to be kept on my shortlist and which might be ones you'ld avoid (if any)?

I use the Orlando Health hospitals which include Orlando Regional Medical Center. It's not really close to WDW but is the only level 1 trauma center in Orlando and they do offer neuro treatment. I would not recommend Celebration Hospital even though it is the closest.

Just a thought, not sure if this will apply to you or not...if you have any kind of implanted device (shunt, coil, etc), see if you can get a CD with a current scan on it to take with you. Our local neurosurgeon says that if someone is traveling and needs emergency treatment, the most helpful thing for the new doctor is to see what a baseline scan looks like. That way they can see if the current problem looks worse in some way.

How are you doing by the way? Hopefully as good as can be considering.

All things considered, I am doing okay, other than back pain where the tumor is crushing my spine and severe shortness of breath. My latest scan showed no further growth but also no further shrinkage of the tumors. I had a reaction to one of the chemo drugs and can no longer take it, so will have to see if the two he's leaving me on will continue to keep growth at bay. There is only so much they can do until the cancer takes over as it's not curable.

I hope your rehab goes well and your next procedure. I admire you for plugging away and for continuing to live your life in the best way possible. Goofy is waiting to see his sis' again!

It's actually a standard strategy since I reformed "my care". Noticing the cracks within our national health care system and my travelbug, I decided to be my own manager since then. So any and all possible important lab results, scores, baselines and what not are in my own map and always coming along into medical situations and on travels.



What to say, Kathy? Doesn't sound horribly bad but also not that positive it's only cheers. Good to read that the latter outweight the first, though. Fingers crossed you still have busloads of quality of life and quantity left.

Please don't admire! We all have our crosses to bear, some more visable than others, some heavier than others, we all have our ways of doing things. We all know it's not always easy but in my way of doing life there is only one way; going for quality of life. With that goal it's always clear in the long run why, how and at what cost to do or not do. It leaves no real other options than that one path being the one to go on. And hey, I'm Dutch. We're stubborn to begin with and thanks to a "liberal society" there is more room than on most places in our world for better support, care and what not more if need be when one can not do such a thing solo. Does make a huge difference.

Kathy, just wanted to dat thanks again. The trip dus go through as planned, originally. 6 Days in, ended up being rushed to hospital. I can now (un)fortunately see why you recommanded what you did.

Had a stroke, thanks god with little permanent damage. Not in the least thanks to the paramedics and team of this hospitalgroup. Getting an er att. who kneed the world about my syndrome was just one of those comforting moments. Thanks a million again for sharing your opinion!!
