I am searching for any and all sources for donated or refurbished hospital beds. My friend's 40 yr. old disabled daughter just had her colon removed and her bag needs changing very often. Since she can sit in a chair for portions of the day, she is not qualified under Medicare for a bed. Any suggestions of where to look for a used, donated, or inexpensive bed would be greatly appreciated.

If you were in Los Angeles area you could have my spare hospital bed, been sitting there for 3 years in the living room.

I have no answers for you though, maybe the others can help.
Mom has a bed and she is mobile but needs it when sleeping as she has to be elevated at night. They should have given you the bed and you go fight them. I am almost certain they should have given you the bed. FIGHT is the only word for HMOs and that the government. I have to buy a wheelchair for mom because if them idiots.

You might try checking with your local visiting nurses. When my Dad was dying they were very helpful in lending us equipment. We donated some things that we bought (or that medicare bought like the hospital bed) after he died. If they don't lend equipment, maybe they could point you towards someone who could.

Also, you might try posting on Craigs List. Maybe somone in your area has a bed they no longer need but don't know what to do with.

Good luck to your friend and her daughter.

Thank you so much for your kind responses. We are still trying to locate a bed and wil incororate your good ideas!

If you can get someone to Norwalk, CA to pick up the bed then you can have it. It goes up on one end but with the other bar replaced would go up and down on both end with the control. I wish I could mail you a bed and If I had a truck I would drive up to 5 hours but I have no truck.

You might also want to check your local Freecycle. I think its a Yahoo group. We donated some equipment that way after a relative passed away, and I got a really cool cane through a local group after I lost one while on vacation.

Hope something works out for you soon!

People who sit in a wheelchair still qualify for a hospital bed under Medicare. They usually have some criteria like-immobility, incontinence, change in cognition and others. Medicare should provide a hospital bed frame and mattress for her because they provided a wheelchair. I was in the bed business for a while and it is very easy to qualify for one especially if she is disabled and using a wheelchair. If someone has told you different the please call another company. If she does not have insurance then that is more difficult, but if she has Medicare they should pay. Medicaid in our state does not pay for hospital beds in our state for people over the age of 21. Maybe it is Medicaid that she has and not Medicare. Then I could see the problem.

If she has an ileostomy the appliance she is using to collect the stool should last 3-4 days with it being emptied (not changed) several times a day. If she is changing her appliance more than that she needs to see an Ostomy Nurse to help figure out why the appliance is having to be changed so frequently. Ileostomies have frequesnt liquid stool and it gets very expensive if you are changing the appliance often. The pouches are meant to be worn for several days at a time then emptied from the bottom as needed.
