If horses don't wear horseshoes in the wild then why do their domesticated friends have to wear them? :confused3

I was pondering this on my way to work this morning.

I would imagine its because in the wild they walk over terrain where their feet are worn down such as rocks and other rough terrain.
For domesticated horses they stay in nice grassy paddocks or in stalls where there are fewer chances of their feet being worn down.
Also, domesticated horses are actually used for riding, etc. where wild horses don't have anyone riding them.

Horses feet actually grow like fingernails and if they aren't trimmed they will actually curl up and permanently damage a horses feet and legs.

horses in the wild have tougher hooves from being on the different surfaces..Some domesticated horses use horse shoes to help stop their feet from being sore, its like using shoes when we walk on rocks. .. some need them to keep their hooves at the correct alignment. my mare is barefoot and thankfully doesnt need horse shoes because they are expensive!

I thought it was because they are more sophisticated. :)

Because domesticated horses understand the importance of being fashionable!

No fashion for my horse. She's barefoot ( except for formal events.)

I thought it was for good luck :)

mine are barefoot...but they do get a pedicure every 6 weeks!
