Horseback ridding at Ft. Wilderness?

Sorry if this isn't the right place to post this, but I wasn't sure...

BF and I are planning a non-park day during our trip. We already have a PS for the 7:15 PM Hoop De Doo, so we have to be at Pioneer hall by 6:30 - 6:45 or so. We also want to do the horseback riding, and time it so we have some time in between, but not too much tim. How long does the ride take, and how did you like it?

Guided horseback rides are offered 6 times daily (8:30, 10, 11:30 a.m., 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m.) at the Tri-Circle D Livery at Fort Wilderness. The rides, which cost $32 per person, last approximately 45 minutes. Riders must be at least 9 years old and 48 inches tall and can weigh no more than 250 pounds. The horses are tame and walk pretty much single file during the ride. If you're an experienced rider, this ride may be too dull for you. If you've not had an opportunity to ride a horse before or have done so rarely, this ride may be just what you're looking for. To make reservations, call (407) 824-2832. It is strongly suggested that you wear long pants and that you do not wear open-toed or heeled shoes. To get to the Tri-Circle D Livery, you can drive to and park in the Fort Wilderness Visitor parking lot and walk; board the bus at the TTC and take it to the Outpost Depot bus stop; take the Fort Wilderness boat from the marina at the Magic Kingdom to the Fort Wilderness marina and then walk to the Settlement Depot bus stop where you'd then board the bus to the Outpost Depot.

My DH and I did it in 1999 on our engagement trip and again in 2001 on an extended family trip. The ride is very gentle and definitely aimed for non-experienced riders. The terrain is all flat and I don't beleive we went faster than a walk.

Once you check-in at the ranch you are brought to the "loading" area, where you climb a few steps and mount your horse just about level to the saddle. Once the group is all set, you embark on about a 45 minute ride (ours were 35 min and 50 min, respectively). You travel through the light woods of Ft. Wilderness, crossing one of the FW driveways in the process.

Both times we went (June in 99 and Dec 01) we enjoyed the ride, although we have a bit more horse riding experience, so we felt it was a bit tame. You can get a little dusty, so you may want to plan for some time to freshen up after the ride. We also like to visit the other residents of the Tri-Circle D Ranch while we're over there, so you may want to allow some time for that, too. You should be fine with the 4pm ride, though. Oh- and make sure to wear jeans-- you'll be a bit more comfortable.

I just called and made reservations for this the other day. They told me that the last ride is at 2:30 daily, they did away with the 4:00 one.

My daughter did it a few years ago and loved it. She can't wait to do it again this trip.

Hmm- good point! I supposed it's bad that I've ridden more at WDW recently than I have here in MA (and I'm in horse country out here!)
