Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I have tried looking online and through the dis boards but I cannot seem to get a handle on how the dvc works. All I get is you get points every year and you use those points for reservations. Could anyone please give me a run down of how this works? Most specifically how you would rent points and how many points you would need I guess since at the moment I don't have 30k siting around to spend on vacationing :) thanks in advance!!

Renting points is a process where someone can purchase points from an owner which will get them a specific reservation at a resort for the dates and room size you want for one trip. The exact number you will need and how much you will pay for them will depend on the desired resort, room size and dates to travel. A good site to go and see what the number of points needed across all of the properties is tagrel.com Hope that helps!!

Any of the DVC rental sites should have point charts or better a point calculator for you to use.

It's pretty simple, you figure out when you want to go, and what accommodations you want, and that converts to points for each night.

Like a studio standard view at AKL for tonight (July 6) is 16 points. Last night because it was a saturday (the points can be different on different days of the week) it was 18. But a 2 bed room at BLT magic kingdom view is 76 points last night and 64 tonight.

So without a lot of details no one can tell you "how many points you need."

You can go to our DVC Rent/Trade Board for information about renting a reservation from a DVC member (you are not really renting "points" - only a reservation made by a member using their points). Be sure to read the "Important!! - **How to use this Board** - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING" thread near the top of the board. This thread offers some good information about the rental process.

At the top of this page at the upper right (beneath the Timeshare Store banner) there is a link to DVC Point Charts - http://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-vacation-club/DVCpoints.shtml - which will show you the number of points needed for each night of a stay at a DVC Resort.

Like Doc said, you are not renting points. You are purchasing a reservation from a member who made it using their points. So you aren't purchasing from Disney and they don't get involved if there is an issue. You don't have the ability to make requests or add the dining plan or Magical Disney Express. The owner has to do that for you.

So, it's not all that different than renting from Disney. But there are lots of limitations.

Others have given you accurate information on renting a reservation.

As to this part of your questions, Disney Vacation Club is a timeshare. There is a rather large initial purchase cost, plus annual fees each year for 30-50 years or so. Each year, you receive a new allotment of points which you use to make reservations. DVC is an expensive and quite limited timeshare system, but it very easy to understand and use and offers something no other timeshare offers -- ONSITE lodgings at Walt Disney World.

There are a total of 12 DVC resorts, 8 of them at WDW. You can book reservations 11 months in advance at your "home" resort (the resort where you own a tiny piece of one unit represented by points), 7 months ahead at any of the others.

If you think timeshare ownership might be right for your family, I'd encourage you to take a LOT of time, and do a lot of research.

For DVC, there is no better place than here on the DISboards.

For timeshares generally, there are a number of resources, but I think the best one overall is the Timeshare Users Group (TUG) at http://www.tugbbs.com/forums/index.php?
