I am helping some first timers plan a trip for their whole extended family. They are staying offsite at a timeshare and are not "Disney-type" people. My friend, who is the planner of the group, wants to have a dinner alone with her fiance. She asked me for suggestions. She seems to be interested in the dinner/show type places like Arabian nights, mystery sleuth dinner etc. I thought that the Hoop Dee Doo would be great for them, though. I have only ever done the Medieval Times show years ago and HDD. Any thoughts or recommendations?

I have done Spirit of Aloha at Disney and Dixie Stampede and Arabian Nights off-site. I much preferred Dixie Stampede and Arabian Nights. They were a much better value and more entertaining to me. You can buy discount tickets online for both of them or at AAA. Out of the 2 of them, Dixie Stampede had MUCH better food, but I liked the story at Arabian Nights better. On a future trip, I will try Medieval Times and Pirate Adventure Dinner. The WDW just aren't as appealing to me.

While we enjoyed both, we also like Dixie Stampede better than HDD. We're going to the Sea World Luau in Dec. If you have a little time to plan, I'll let you know what we thought. We're also going to the DS Christmas show Christmas Day. :)

tarhellmjfan, we've done the Sea World luau and hated it... ugh the food was baaaad... but, to be fair, it was several years ago and they might have changed it. I just didn't like the show nor the food...

We did HDD this year and loved it. A few years ago we went to a mystery/sleuth show close to DTD, I don't remember the name, and it was decent... not great but alright.

I hope it has improved. DS & I are surprising DH with the luau for his birthday. We've always wanted to go to one. We booked it, because I have read some positive reviews for the SW Luau, but not really for the one at the Poly. I guess we'll find out. Wish us luck. :wizard:

We really enjoyed the Dixie Stampede (Dolly Parton). We went during Christmas time, and it was wonderfully done. They of course have Santa ride by in his sleigh, but also a quick remembrance of the Birth of Christ, with Mary and Joseph. The food wasn't bad, and they have a cute store to shop in. They also give you a preshow(in another room), which was cute. If your children love horses, after your show, you can walk out to the stable and see them. Some go to the ledge, so you can pet them. Fun Fun!!

This past January my friend and I went to the Sleuth's Mystery Dinner Theater. I didn't really like it and neither did my friend. They didn't really seem to involve the audience. I thought there would be more audience involvment so I was disappointed. I do really like the Dixie Stampede. They have really good food and a great show and the price isn't too bad.

We have done qite a few of these including Medievel Time, Dixie Stampede and HDDR.

They are all qite different. What we liked best about HDDR is why we like all of WDW best, they treat you like you are somebody. At all the other show we have attended, you are herded with a 1000 other people and kind of tossed your food by a waiter that has that same 1000 people to serve. At HDDR you are shown to YOUR server and taken well care of During the meal.

They shows them self are different. Medieval times is wonderful and exciting. Food was ok and they have nothing differnt for small kids who might not eat well. (AT least our last visit which has been a while). We liked to food better at Dixie, but were not crazy about the show, but really liked the Christmas one.
HDDR is not for everyone. It is corny country hummor, that we happen to really enjoy. There is really nothing disney to the show except the way they handel the whole thing!!!

Good luck deciding.
