Hooked On Phonics

has anyone used Hooked on Phonics- Master reader with their kids.

I am thinking about getting it for my 7yo 2nd grader who is struggling with reading.

My son is 7 as well and is struggling with reading too. I bought it for my son in Kindergarten and it was really boring. A lot of people I know have had the same complaint. It's just not really exciting for the kids. www.starfall.com is a good site to check out. They make it fun at least!

My dd got tired of hooked on phonics in a matter of days it was so boring.
We have used www.starfall.com , www.studydog.com, and www.progressivephonics instead and they seem a lot better.

DON'T BUY IT!

I am a Reading Specialist and truly believe Hooked on Phonics is a very big waste of money. I am not familiar with the other websites listed but will check them out.

Does your school have reading support programs for your child? My belief is that beyond 2nd grade a student needs individual help in reading to improve skills IN ADDITION to group reading activities. If your child has not been tested, now is the time--early intervention is most important. Students need to have developed strong reading skills by the end of 3rd grade. (By testing I DO NOTmean Special Education testing--there should be some provision for Reading Assessment).


(any phonics or game type program should be great for 3/4 year olds that are prereading and learning to read but Hooked on Phonics is NOT for students who already have reading problems)

Well, I bought it when DD was 3.5 and she loved it, the tapes had catchy songs and we would do 20 minutes or so a day. By 4 she was easily reading the book set that came with the Hooked on Phonics (we ordered it from their website, it came with books with cute charactors that she loved and a progress chart with stickers which also motivated her). By Kindergarten she was reading 2nd grade level or above and has tested every year as gifted, our school has an accelerated reading class that she has been in since 1st grade. It worked for us and it was a lot of fun. She is an avid reader which is what I wanted for her as I love to read.
