and knee arthritis. Our first bulldog had pretty bad dysplasia too. Hooch started adequan injections today, same as Winnie's treatment, which helped her a lot. We will also go glucosamine/chondroitin/msm and speak with our holistic vet about other natural possibilities. Would prefer to avoid NSAIDs if we can keep him comfortable without them. Looking into acupuncture too.
Thanks to everyone who was keeping him in their thoughts.

Oh glad that he's home and now Mom can breathe ;)

I had 2 Chows that had Hip Dysplasia..at least there are better treatments and meds now...once they get the right one and it works..he'll be much better.

Glad to hear that he is home. I was thinking about him today!

He has been in my thoughts today. Glad he is home and able to recuperate with mom. I don't know much about dysplasia, but I know it can take 4-8 weeks to start seeing results from glucosamine. Getting him started on the right medications and supplements will help him greatly. I really do understand your concerns about the NSAIDS. Good luck to your sweet Hooch.

I'll be interested in hearing how your pooh does with the injections. I have Newfies and one had a big problem with his neck and back just before Christmas. We did have him an NSAIDs for a bit, he seems much better. Several people I know suggested the injections for future problems.

We are currently using Vit E and glucosimine with really good results.

Hope your doggy does OK.

Glad Hooch is home, and I hope you find an effective way to treat his dysplasia and arthritis. :)

Glad he did ok,but sorry to hear about the dysplasia. My lab had it very badly. She was on glucoisimine/chondrotin for a long time, then did have to resort to NSAIDS towards the end. Swimming is a wonderful exercise for dysplasia or even walking on a treadmill in water.

We have a Newfie now and I keep looking for signs of it in her, but so far so good. We'll have her checked at 2, but if she has it, we'll just do our best to make her comfortable.

Good luck and give him special good boy treats!

I know this isn't an option for everyone, but my mom takes her dog (who has hip dyplasia) to a veterinary college for therapy. He walks on a teadmill in the water! Keeps his muscle up without putting a lot of strain on him. He is also on glucosamine and pain pills for when he seems to be in a lot of pain.

Thanks everyone! Our first bully did the water therapy. I'm not sure how Hooch would handle it. When he gets very stressed he can get aggressive at the vet (he's a rescue). He has come a long way with these issues, but he's never going to a perfectly complacent dog. We may give it a try though if the therapist is willing. I wonder how much one of those tanks costs....hmmm...yes, I'm nuts...I'd put one in my basement, lol
