Sorry if this has been discussed.

Where's the best place to get a tasty ham, without paying the higher price for a Honey Baked Ham?

Or does anyone have an easy glaze they use on ham? Recipe? And on what kind of ham?

TIA budget board peeps! :goodvibes

I usually get a Smithfield Ham. Look for the one that has the honey glaze packet. THe ham usually cost $20.00 for 10lb one

We actually prefer Kirkland from Costco. I went to Honey Baked once...totally not worth the wait (had to wait in line !!!) or price.

I don't know if you belong to a Sam's Club or Costco, but we love the ones there. Just bought two from Costco the other day as we are having over 40 for Easter.

Lowes food had them on special-gwaltney brand-here this week. I bought one even though we will be out of town for Easter so that we can still have some!

The ones from sam's club and Walmart are great. They are in a shiny purple foil!

Kirkland from Costco. We used to get a Honeybaked every year. I'm so glad we switched. I think the quality is exactly the same. I paid $2.29/lb for this year's Kirkland ham vs. the $8/lb or so that Honeybaked charges. Sam's is also very good, but I don't think its glaze tastes quite as good as the Kirkland or Honeybaked.

I agree. We will probably get another Kirkland one this year. Trader Joe's has a good one as well.

I agree with chl2 - the one from Walmart/Sam's with the shiny purple foil is delicious. I was not at all impressed with the ham I bought at Honey Baked Ham. Won't go back there!

I've been purchasing Aldi's Appleton Farms hams for several years now. Right now the spiral sliced is $1.69/lb with glaze packet included.

I'll be the dissenter. We have tried hams from Costco and the supermarket. They are okay. But the Honey Baked hams are really, really good. So I don't economize on the ham. I buy Honey Baked.

Get the one in gold wrap instead of red wrap (Costco). The sodium is 15% vs 35%.

I just made a store brand spiral ham in my crockpot this weekend. I put a cup of brown sugar on the bottom, placed the ham on top and then dumped a can of pineapple tidbits with juice on top. I did baste it a few times while it was cooking. It was ridiculously easy and my husband said it was the best ham he ever had. I think it was onsale for about $2/lb.

Where do you live? I have been buying Dearborn hams, which is local to SE Michigan. A couple dollars cheaper per pound than Honey Baked. I have not found that the grocery store versions are quite the same, good, but just not the same.

I use this recipe I got from Kopy Kat Recipes. We love it!:lovestruc

You can make your own sugar coated ham for your special holiday or special occassion.

Ingredients
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg (freshly ground, if possible)
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 bone-in spiral-sliced precooked ham

Instructions

In a small bowl, combine the sugar, onion powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and paprika. Mix the seasoned sugar mixture well. Cover a baking sheet with aluminum foil; if you fail to do this, you may have burnt sugar on your pan, and it will take a while to clean off. Place the ham open meat side down onto the pan. Sprinkle with the seasoned sugar mixture. Press the sugar onto the outside of the ham. You may not use all of the seasoned sugar mixture.

With a blowtorch, gently heat the seasoned sugar mixture on the ham. Wave the flame quickly over the sugar—you want the sugar to brown, not burn. Staying in one area, and moving out from there slowly will make this easier, as you will be heating the sugar in a continual direction. This whole process will take about 15 minutes, so be patient. You can sprinkle more sugar on top of the already browned parts of the ham and make the crust thicker.

You can either reheat the ham or serve it cold when you are finished.

Here is my favorite ham recipe that I use every Easter. We don't have a Honey Baked store in my town. Don't be scared by the horseradish -- it gives a hint of flavor, not too strong at all. There is just a subtle presence of something special, not at all hot.

HORSERADISH HONEY HAM

1 5-7 pound spiral-cut, fully-cooked ham OR
2 smaller spiral-cut, fully-cooked hams
¼ cup warm honey
¼ tsp cloves
1 cup packed brown sugar
½ cup prepared horseradish (not creamy kind)
¼ cup lemon juice

1. Preheat oven to 325º. Place ham/s in a shallow roasting pan or baking dish. Combine honey and cloves, drizzle over ham. Bake uncovered at 325º for 1 to 1½ hours for a big ham or until meat thermometer reads 140º. Baste often with drippings. Decrease time for smaller hams.
2. Combine brown sugar, horseradish, and lemon juice. Increase oven temperature to 400º. Baste ham with sauce so that sauce penetrates between the slices. Bake uncovered for another 15 minutes.

I'm a Costco ham girl. Honeybaked bones are too smokey for soup at then end! :rotfl: I think they are also much more affordable.

I tend to do a riff on Nigella Lawson's ginger beer glaze. Great stuff.
