We are looking at purchasing a used Honda CR-V LX 2008. We would like to get it Honda certified. We are currently looking at one with 45 K miles with the LX package. Internet price is $16,626. Is this a good deal?

Does anyone know how much room for negotiation there is. The dealer claims they added the "appearance package" which usually adds $995 to the vehicle. I have read online that there have been complaints that this really raises the price. They also will add $995 to the above price if we want it documented as Honda certified. We are in NJ if that makes a difference.

If anyone has any experience or tips, I would certainly appreciate it.

Many Thanks!! :)

You didn't put the year model.

My daughter has a CRV and it has been a great car! Hardly any problems at all, just normal maintenance, tires etc.

you should check all the local dealers by you...look at their online inventory to get an idea of the pricing in your area ;)
I would get certified vehicle...its worth it and they guarantee as they did the work up of the vehicle. Be sure to ask and see the car fax, each dealer has it...
as far as Honda, we have three, the original crv when it rolled out....150K miles and doing fine.....a Loaded pilot (LOVE her) and a loaded accord thats a great vehicle as well..
I purchased 2 certified, also bought the extended wrap arounds on them.(so many electronics, navi etc)..I paid 995. for that each and that was a great price, and dealers CAN do it...you have to negotiate hard....mine is for 7 years..(it is bumper to bumper and is also transferable)
Hondas last , are reliable and I have no complaints
Good Luck :wizard:

Just a note, CarFax is absolutely worthless to look at. It only reports reported stuff.

I had a 1988 Toyota 4Runner, billions of miles on it. I had it forever. Icy road and a telephone pole, and 2 incidents with deer, I had totaled the truck 3 times. I didn't carry any insurance on it. I fixed it myself all 3 times including rewelding the entire front end of a 1987 pickup truck on it (after 1 of the deer incident.) That truck had a perfect CarFax report.

My current car I bought used, a 2003 VW Jetta. It also has a perfect CarFax report. It has been in an accident and the left headlight and front fender replaced and bodywork on both driver side doors and rear quarterpanel. I can see the paint runs, the clear headlight replacement in contrast with the old right side fogged up headlight (common problem with VW headlights) and the sanding marks in the body filler on the doors that shows in the paint. It absolutely was in an accident at some point in time, but as I said, CarFax report is perfect.

Oh, and I looked it up on KBB. 2008 CR-V LX with 45k in my zipcode reports for certified pre-owned a value of $19,231. Three 2008 CRV at my local Honda, the LX is listed for $16,750. The EX model is significantly more.

The "appearance package" is a scam that dealers use to try to get more money out of unsavy car shoppers. Don't pay a dime for that. I also find it dubious any claim that you need to pay a "certified" fee. If its certified used, then it's certified used.

I know used is a bit cheaper, but have you compared with new. For us the price difference of new and used when we bought ours (2010) was not that big a difference in price and depending on if you are financing or not the incentives on new might be worth gettign new instead. We paid just over $20,000 for ours, brand new, all wheel drive and at the time financing was 1.6% for 3 years. It's a hefty monthly payment to finance for 3 years, but to us it was worth it as we had the money inthe bank to pay in full, but didn't feel comfortable with depleting our savings by that much.

The CRV holds it's value quite well, and I love ours.

Also, if you consider buying new you can go the the Honda website and request bids from all the dealers within driving difference. You might be surprised at the different bids you get. For us we paid less than invoice by taking bids and then going to the dealership we wanted to buy from and they price matched the lowest bid we got.

Personally, if you trust that the car is in god shape, skip the certified part. Honda's are generally maintenance free cars and the extra $1000 is probably not worth it. We just sold our 2000 LX model for $5000. In the 10 years we had it (bought it from an independent guy at 13 months old) we had 1 issue. the differential fluid needed to be replaced. My husband idd it for about $30.

We did the same thing! We have a 2010 that we bought new on promo. In the past we always bought a newer "used" model but we have found being a Honda family that often times now the used are very close in price to new so if you are financing the rate deals can make a difference.

It's a great car.

I have a CR-V bought new in 2009 and I paid around $20,000 not the LX model. Sometimes they are less when the new year models come out and you can get a good deal. Love it and haven't had any problems so far. I would check new prices as well. When I looked the new ones weren't that much more considering full warranty, no miles, etc. Same was true for the Toyotas I looked at.

I have a 2010 CRV that we bought new, and I LOVE it. Best car I have ever owned. We bought it new, but like several PP's, we got an awesome interest deal that made buying new cheaper. Our dealer did have a package of "add ons" that was about $700, but it was things like the heavy duty cargo mat, better floormats, ect that we were planning to purchase anyway.

I have a 2007 CRV. Love it! The only non-rountine maintenance item was the rear differential fluid. I had to have it replaced twice so far. It cost about $65 each time through my mechanic.

I have no CRV experience but I heard that Honda is running a 0.9% interest rate incentive through the end of February on certain vehicles. (I just bought a Civic). Like other said, even if a new CRV is more expensive, if you plan to finance it you might find that the "new" interest rate will make buying a new car hard to beat. Financing a used car will have a substanially higher interest rate.

added Not saying that it will happen with this one, but I had to replace the engine on my 2008 honda CRV at 76,000 miles. It was not cheap ($4000)! Honda would not stand behind their product. We drive alot (80 miles a day round trip to work), but it is all highway driving. We keep up with all of the maininance on our cars. This never should have happened. Also the air compressor for the air conditioner broke, of course after the warenty was up. My DH 2008 Accord has had numerous problems too (air compressor, brakes). We currently have the CRV and an Accord we will not be buying any more Hondas after this experiance!

Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

You must be the unluckiest person in the World. We own five Hondas, three bought used and two new. My daughter is still driving the 2002 Accord we bought her 10 years ago with only minimal repairs through the years. We bought extended warranties on the 2005 and 2006 Elements we purchased used but have never had a claim / repair. We bought our neighbor's 2000 Accord and have only had one minor repair. Our Odyssey is doing great at three years old.

We have had 4 hondas before this and never had a problem either. I am thinking it is the model year or the dealer. We are just very disapointed at Hondas attitude that since the car was over the warrenty period they would do nothing and they were "sorry". Not a very goood way to stand behind your product and value your customers. It was only 8,000 miles out of warrenty. I know they have to cut it off some place, but a care with under 100,000 miles should not need a new engine. I still love my CRV although not the same as before all of this. DH's last accord was great as were the 4 others before.

I can't really fault them for that. They should have been very apologetic, but if they go 8,000 miles for you, the next guy will want to know why they didn't go 9,000 for him. It never ends.

There was a big controversy here in town this week because a non-profit missed the deadline for applying for money by 11 minutes. Everybody is saying 11 minutes is ridiculous. The county mayor is holding fast. The deadline was the deadline. If they give that agency an extra 11 minutes, someone will sue for the time they didn't get 12 minutes.

We always buy 100,000 mile warranties on our cars. I know that common wisdom is that this is a bad value, but I love knowing that at least for the first 100K, I won't have any unexpected expense for repairs.
