my DD has an assignment to identify the areas in the UK (land and sea) where the following natural resources are located:
coal, petroleum, natural gas, tin, limestone, iron ore, salt and arable land.
Can you find it in your hearts to just give us a brief description of where each would be located so we could color it on the map we've printed...... We've searched high and low and cannot find a graphic map on the web.

MANY THANKS KIND DISNEY FRIENDS:wave2:

I'm sure someone more knowledgable than me will be able to help you soon! I am rubbish at things like that:(

Down near here in Dorset is a big oilfield - Wytch Farm. I'm sure if you did a search on the web it will show up a lot of information. I know there was a big new find around here last year, so there's probably case reports, field trips somewhere on the web! Wytch Farm is in a beautiful area and when they discovered the new site they had to ensure all the digging of the land would be restored back to its former glory, so there's bound to be something on that (Shell rings a bell).

I know Southampton is also in the gas and oil field, so another look for that might throw something up.

Wish you DD good luck for us:D

Me again;)

Just had a quick look and this seems as though it might be of interest . . .

http://www.brookes.ac.uk/geology/8361/1999/sarah/intro.htm

It gives info on where the oil farm is, how it was found etc.

I'm sorry, I didn't realise you're from over the pond, Dorset is one of the Southerly counties in England, a beautiful area:D

Tin was mined a lot down in Cornwall - again a search on the net would more than likely throw lots of information up, start with tin+cornwall.

Arable land is throughout the UK, we're actually surrounded by it where I live - literally. We have farmland bordering our property where he grows wheat, maize (for cattle fodder) and a few cows!

Let me know if there's anything else to help :wave2:

Arable land dont know much about England other than East Anglia, but in Scotland its East Central Scotland ( where we have 300 acres) East Lothian, Bits of Fife, Aberdeenshire.
I'll ask DH for more when he comes in for lunch, he's out sowing this years Barley (on a whisky contract) right now.
Hope this helps a bit.

 Many thanks, my friends !

we received all your help and my DD is so impressed by what can come out of these Boards!! I've told her before it's not just for Mickey Mouse trivia......it was awesome to chat with you. If there's anything I can do for you, let us know.
THANKS AGAIN.

:D Pleasure to help.

Let us know how it all goes, please:wave:

Ok checked with DH about arable land, basically down the east side of the country, although there is a rough bit between Northumberland and Lincolnshire.
Hope that helps, also there were a lot of coal mines in Lanarkshire and Co Durham.

There is natural gas under the Irish Sea (between Ireland and north-west England) and oil in the North Sea (off Eastern Scotland). There are rigs in the sea which drill for these resources, extract them and pipe them to the mainland.

There's limestone in the Yorkshire Dales - Malham is one area where it is found, at Malham Cove, which sounds as though it is on the coast, but is in fact inland. It's a very beautiful area in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Good luck with the homework - hope this is not too late.

coal - Newcastle, Yorkshire
petroleum - sorry no idea
natural gas - under the North Sea
tin - Cornwall
limestone - Yorkshire Dales
iron ore - sorry don't know. Possibly peak district/Derbyshire? Some Iron Age settlements there
salt - Cheshire
arable land - everywhere!
