Any thoughts on the issue? My second grader gets a sheet with the week's worth of homework assignments on it, and I was thrilled to see that the teacher is giving them tonight off from homework. My fifth grader, on the other hand, was told by her teacher yesterday that, yes, they will have homework tonight.

While it's not an official holiday...come on - give the kids a break! They so much look forward to Halloween. It takes time to get dressed up, go out trick-or-treating, greet other trick-or-treaters, get the costume off, etc. Why give them homework on tonight? Let them have one day off.

I'm hoping the teacher changes her mind. What do you think about it?

My kids middle school will give out homework. Heck, my daughters elementary school isn't even doing a Halloween celebration--no parties, parade or anything like that. Its fall festival Tuesday. All the activities will be math and language arts based with some singing.

My kids middle school will give homework for sure. I dont expect that the elementary will have much. During the day today they have a halloween parade and party so I don't expect they will get much work done. We'll see.

I work in a 5th grade classroom and their Grammar homework that is normally due on wed. is extended to Thursday. As far as math, DON'T think she will give any. Our teacher are pretty cool. We don't celebrate Halloween at school however we give the kids a break tonight with homework.

No homework in elementary schools or middle school for us tonight! My DD can concentrate on trick or treating.

My wife is a 3rd grade teacher and won't be giving any tonight. I'm sure my elementary aged son won't have any, but I know my middle school and high school kids will.

My first grader has homework. (Same deal as the OP; the homework for the whole month is assigned on one sheet of paper.) Fortunately, it won't take long! I don't know about my middle and high schoolers.

cripies-my kids get homework no matter what's going on (even if there's a mandatory school event that nite). when dd went to school sponsored 'sports camp' for 3 days/2 nites she had to do the same work/homework the kids that stayed behind did.

we have homework m-th, and when the school is on holiday or winter/spring vacation the kids are still expected to do their nightly reading/be reading their 'book of the month'.

Both my third and sixth graders will have work tonight... the third grader's won't take so long, so that is good... but my sixth grader will have to wake up (again) at 5:30 to do his homework if he can't get it done tonight.

My kids usually get homework on Halloween but they have plenty of time after school to get it done so it has never really bothered me I guess.

My kids' school is actually ALLOWING costumes this year. The principla is new this year and I'm very surprised they are allowing costumes.
As far as homework goes, I'm hoping that they don't have any today. We're in the middle of a move and it's chaotic enough with the move and halloween!!

no homework for us tonight!!
The halloween parade in school starts at 130 and then the halloween party is from 145-315...we have a craft to do, lots of junk food, cupcakes, chips, gummy worms pinned on apples, jello jigglers etc..dance music to dance and a couple games to play!

It never bothered me that my son had homework on Halloween. He knew that we would not leave the house until all homework was done.

Halloween was one of the few times during the year he managed to get his homework done in a reasonable amount of time. :rotfl2:

My niece and nephew (2nd &4th grades) will both have homework tonight. They have two hours between the time they get home and time they start getting dressed to go out. More than enough time to get homework done and still have plenty of fun. :cheer2:

My 5th grader will most likely not have any homework tonight.

My 8th grader, on the other hand, will probably get a little. I don't have a problem with a little homework, but I do have a problem with the fact that she has a Science test TOMORROW ! Come on, that's just mean ! :furious:

Worse than homework, we have 6 weeks tests tomorrow. I guess they think middle schoolers don't trick or treat :furious:

My 1st grader doesn't have "official" homework...but he's in one of the top reading groups and they get (optional) extra work each week. He still had that to do tonight, but he decided to do it last night so he's free tonight. :thumbsup2

I think it's a nice gesture for the teachers to not give homework (to ANY grade) tonight. But I wouldn't expect it.

My DD is in 2nd grade and I doubt her teacher will give homework tonight. However, it's all of 20 min. worth on most nights so it's no big deal one way or the other.

Actually, she has to finish her spelling work that's due tomorrow so she'll be doing homework tonight anyway.

How much does your 5th grader usually get?

The public system in our area does not even have school tomorrow!!!!

So my kids, who are in the private system but share busses with the public system, have to get on the bus at 7:30 instead of 8:00 because they are doing one big bus loop (about 1.5 hours on the bus!)

Even the high school kids have tomorrow off.

My kids have had homework in the past on Halloween, not sure about this year but since they are in 8th and 11th grades it really doesn't matter cause they don't dress up or trick or treat.

When they did, homework was done right after school. Dinner was a little earlier than normal, they got in costume and went out trick or treating, that was usually only an hour. They always wanted to get home to hand out the candy more than going out to get the candy.
