Are we doing this right? List the direct objects in each sentence.

1. In 1901 a message crossed the Atlantic. Atlantic

2. The inventor organized his own company. his company

Direct objects are in the predicate of the sentence. It's the object of what's being done by the subject. In your examples, "Atlantic" and "company" are the direct objects. "Message" is the subject-it's what crossed. I think in this instance "his" is an adjective-it tells you what company.

Hope this helps! :)

yes, you are correct!

eta; oops! pp is correct, the first sentence 'message' is the subject, atlantic is the d.o.

the direct object is that which 'receives' the action of the verb:

[noun = the one executing the action]
[verb = the action]
[direct object = receives the action]

Looks good, but I believe the direct object is one word/thing so it would just be "company". But, you've got the hang of it! :thumbsup2

Thanks, I thought longer about the first one and changed my answer.

As far as number 2, could it be a compound direct object? his company
(whose company)

Thanks for your help!!!

I'm going to go way out on a limb and say....possibly? I think a compound DO would be something like "his company and his car"-two nouns linked by a conjunction. "His" is a pronoun, but in this case I think it's telling you "whose company". I'm not sure about that part.

DS just had to do all this in English-that's why it's familiar right now.

A direct object is usually only one word. A compound direct object would be two words connected with "and". "His" is a pronoun that modifies company.
