Homework for WDW trip

My DS is in Kindergarten and will be missing 8 1/2 to 9 days when we go to WDW in April/May. I already know that he will have to journal the trip, and work on his reading. I am currently in the process of printing out the Mouse for Less journal pages for him to use, but I was also thinking of getting for him and his DSis who is going to kindergarten the following year, disposable cameras and let them take their own pictures to add to the journal.

Also we will be driving, and use Microsoft trips to plan the trip and I was going to make the overview maps for Nic to document where we stop and for what, so that his able to work on map skills also.

Anyone else with ideas to share?

We have always given our kids' teachers plenty of notice so that they could let us know what our children would be missing. They have also put together a packet full of tons of things to study and do as well as suggestions of other things to talk about or discuss without our asking. I would use what they give you as a base and build upon that.

Hi! I'm a 1st grade teacher (who goes to DW every year at least once ) & it sounds like you've got plenty for them to do. I know you asked for other ideas but I think you've got plenty. Once you get there, I don't think you'll have time for much else. I hope you have a great trip. BTW, your 2 kids are sooo cute.

The cameras are a great idea. BUT, one problem. I did this as well. Don't count on there being any real good shots. At that age they just click. When you develop the pictures .....well I think you get the picture.

We just came back and I had my kindergartner and first graders keep journals. That was plenty to keep up with at that age! They enjoyed doing them and brought them in to school. Each day they had to do a page telling (pictures and words for them - my daughter has pretty good writing skills for a kindergartener) what they liked best and one thing they learned.

I wouldn't do photos, because my experience has been at this age the delay between taking the picture and putting it into the scrapbook isn't helpful. They live in the "now" and you won't get the photos in until after you get home.

I think a driving map sounds pretty complicated for that age, but you know your kid. I'd think if you want to work on map skills, a better idea might be to have him get a park map and trace your route from the front of the park to the first attraction.

We tried to do a spending journal - too advanced and we abandoned it.

We did do the Epcot country masks. That was very good. We didn't do passports - next trip when they are a little older, they weren't ready yet.

Thanks for mentioning the journal pages, I had forgotten all about them.

The mapping sounds like a good idea, my own DS loves to do that, just depends on where your child's interests lie.

We've also done the passport at Epcot while traveling around doing his mask. Also @ AK they have the Family Fun magazine areas where they can go around learn things/gather clues, here's the link just scroll down:

We went when my eldest DD was in Kinder in May 2004 and I didn't do a journal but I did have her draw some pictures every couple of days. At that age kids aren't really missing much so I really wouldn't worry about it. I'm in one of the top school systems in my state and even her teacher said not to worry about it.
