Hi, any home schoolers out there? I am considering doing this with my children. Are there any websites with information? How do you go about getting started? Thank you in advance for any advice.

hi! i dont remember seeing you here before so welcome to the DIS!!! i homeschool my DS, 6 almost 7yrs old, first grade. this is our first "official" year homeschooling.
before you do anything you need to look at the laws in your state. www.hslda.org has the laws of every state. and in english too! LOL then you need to figure out curriculumn. i do not use a packaged curriculumn. i follow a scope and sequence from http://www2.worldbook.com/parents/

what i did when considering homeschooling was to go to the library and get books to read. most of them put me to sleep. LOL the i decided that i would find a message board similar to this one to ask questions and just read. i personally like the boards at about.com http://forums.about.com/ab-homeschool/start/

type in homeschooling in google and you will get dozens of websites. also when the search function is up and working here search this forum for homeschooling. lots of good advice.

if there is anything else i can help you with feel free to pm me.

first you need to find out what your state laws are.
Then you need to decide your teaching method/learning style.
IE ...
School at home
Ecletic
Waldof
Montessori
Un schooling
Classic
We are I guess what you would call ecletic, using mainly classic methods with DS and blending them with Waldof methods for DD.
While I'm using Calvert K with DD this yr (more of a school at home approach) we will be using
Golden Beetle and Robinson Curriculum with DD starting in the fall.
For 13 yr DS who will be starting High School in the fall we will be using American School of Correspondence

Here are a few review sites to help you get a feel for what is out there
Homeschool Reviews.Com

Waldof Reviews
Also a good site with lots of info
Homeschool.Com

sha_lyn~ please let me know how you like the Robinson Curriculumn. it is something i had looked at but couldnt find any information other than their website. i want a real opinion! thank you!

Thank you for all the helpful links. I had no idea where to start. I am living in NJ so I will check out our laws. Thanks again.

We are in our first year of homeschooling. We have a DD-10 and DS-8. Our main purpose for this was for our DS who has some problems with the way the ps was teaching certain things. He has Auditory Processing problems and therefore couldn't pick up on the phonics method of reading. The first few weeks went so well that we gave our DD the opportunity to come home or continue on one more year of PS. She chose to come home and we have had a great year. I am not saying that each day is perfect, but it has been worth it. I think the sites that others have suggested are great ones. I don't have any others to add at this time as I am new also. I do know that I am feeling more at ease and we will be moving away from the workbooks so much next year and do more unit studies. Good luck with your decision.

A good friend started using it about a month ago. Her 7DD loves it. One thing my friend really likes is it really isn't divided into grades, so each student can work at their own speed through each subject. Robinson is (from how she describes it) a classic curriculum covered in unit form. I was really looking for an economical unit study type approach.
