This is my first time homeschooling and I have a couple of questions...

The questions pertain to the requirements of the state of Ohio....I believe that the law states that you have to notify the Superintendent of your decision to homeschool, if your child is 6 years of age by September 30th. My DD is 4 and will be 5 in November, but my DH and I feel she is ready for the kindergarten curriculum we have picked out for her. If we wait until next year to notify the Superintendent (when she will be 5 going on 6), will she have to re-do kindergarten or can she go ahead to 1st grade? If this might be an issue, do you think I should send a notification to the Superintendent this year even though she will only be 5? I hope my questions makes sense.

Thanks for your input! :goodvibes

You will be A OK. You don't notify as to grade level under the HS requirements. Don't send anything not required.

If by some chance you are planning on registering as an 08 non charter private school, you will be asked a grade level when you go to notify, but you can assign whichever grade level you feel is appropriate.

In Ohio you only give the county office exactly what the law requires, nothing more.

If your child is not old enough to require notification then do not send it!

Are you planning to continue to home school? If so then grade level and curriculum are up to you. If you plan on starting your child at home and next year you want her to start 1st grade.....well you will most likely have a problem doing that.

I question why you are pushing a 4 -5 year old into formal schooling? We found the kids learned so much more when allowed to learn hands on everyday life things. A trip to the store can be very educational. :cool1:

We were forced into sending our youngest to Kindergarten( this was before the present laws were in place), he was reading and grouping obects to do early multiplication, like two goups of three apples is six apples. His teacher said she did not have time to work at his level with him. She was busy teaching colors and counting to 100. Our son was bored to death.

We were able to get him out of the system after that year but that year was very hard on all of us!

I guess long story short, if you are only going to homeschool for 1 year, I think you are causing more harm than good. If you are going to continue to home school, then wait until you are required by law to notifiy and proceed with schooling at what ever level your child needs. You do not have to put a grade level on any of your notification or curriculum papers.

Any way best to you and your daughter! :teeth:
