Is that not judging a book by the cover or stereotyping people
Your ability to spell has no direct correlation to your education level, imagine someone from a different language
Some people could be like me who can type fast, but not very accurate sometimes. Or they are us to using shorthand typing like in work. Where I use to work at had us typing in all capitols since it is easier to read things, that was a hard habit to break

But trluy it is azmanig waht the mnid can raed if jsut the fisrt and lsat lteters are corerct

No, it isn't stereotyping, but keeping myself sane. Your last line shows the true extent of your evilness. And you ARE EVIL.

I think this debate also shows the different philosophies of the Internet. Some people see this as a media that doesn't mean very much and so they just use throwaway posts, and others are more thoughtful with their responses. For example, the difference between a troll or a poster like Fitswimmer, Jenny, or Mugg Mann. Those three truly think through their posts, so no matter what, I stop and read them carefully. I may not always agree with them, but by golly, the effort they take to craft their responses demands respect.

You know what? I'm going to take that thought to another thread. Are you a throwaway poster, or do you agonize over your posting???

Thanks for the compliment.. I'm one of those who agonizes..Then I go back and get really frustrated when I see that my hands failed to do what my brain told it to do.

I get frustrated, too. And what's worse is I "stutter" and forget letters and words. I have to re-read my posts like 4 times before I'm able to move on.

There is a typo in your poll. It is a VERY easy mistake to make.

:lmao: :rotfl2:

So I created the poll, and noticed 2 typos already.. And I have no way to edit them.

My version of being toasty. *argh*

Can you edit if you select "Go Advanced" while you are editing, or can you just not edit a poll?

Just can't edit a poll. I went to Advanced and it doesn't let me fix the poll.

Oh well. I'm a dork.

Oh come on that was a great joke
As for me being evil; well if there was no evil would there be any good?
I actually do enjoy playing devils advocate. I find it really gives you a better perspective on the arguments

I so wish I could get tagged with that in my profile

Jenny, so long as you don't start typing in all caps, I will always "listen" to you and make the effort to decipher your posts. :duck

Honestly, I tend to not say squat about someone's grammar. It was the fact that the OP was talking about homeschooling their 9th grade child that triggered my saying anything. It seemed like the white elephant in the room.

Brandie

In defense of the OP--

if that was the only way how you choose to answer a question, by tackling the merit of their post due to a typo, it does come across as snide.

My step-mother behaves like a know it all. She can quote Miss Manners verbatim. Yet, when she fails to exhibit those manners, she is a walking/talking oxymoron of etiquette.

I no longer listen to her about "correct" etiquette due to her many misguided attempts at educating others on what is proper. I have dealt with it since I was 4 from her.

I still have vivid memories of her refusing to let go of a requested object until I said thank you. She basically pointed out my rudeness by displaying her own in an effort to teach proper manners. It disgusted me and still does to this day. And I do know when to say please and thank you and do so without fail. Oddly I could teach my kids to say those words without displaying such rudeness towards them.

Now please don't misunderstand me, I don't think you were that rude...but it does come across as snide when someone picks apart somene else's qualifications by pointing out a typo on a discussion board. (and you weren't the one who pointed it out).

Have you never seen that published before??? Or are you saying this in jest. I have seen it several times. It is a really cool trick if you think about what our brains can do.

hehehehe!!!

I hate it when I do that. You go to prove a point and then make a silly mistake. My hubby gets great joy when I do that at home.

Yes, I have seen it before. The comment about the poster being evil was meant to provoke a giggle.

Typos JUMP OFF THE PAGE at me. It is unbelievably annoying! It's like having itchy powder on your eyes. When given a page of writing, my eyes automatically see the typo first. If it is a homework assignment, it is almost unbearable not to say something to the writer. In any other circumstance, if the writer is not in the room, I point it out to my hubby. If the error is funny, I comment on the error (as in, an unintentional pun or a situation where a double entendre is created).

I know I'm not alone in my OCD. :rotfl:

Regarding manners... Yup, I've been there, too. There's a use for reasonable manners in society, though. Others do judge you for your manners; they might just not acknowledge it to you.

You can edit that into your profile, if you'd like. Instead of Mouseketeer, throw that line in there.

You had me worried for a second.:rotfl:

I understand being judged by manners. I don't go around pointing out the errors of others though. (As much as I would LOVE to rake dear ol' stepmom over the coals for it. I hold my tongue though.)

I'm not arguing for or against. I asked a question regarding a small subset of students. What I get are statistics regarding the GOOD students and indignant parents trying to make it seem I'm saying something I am not. Who is changing the argument now?

I never said homeschooling is a bad idea, nor that those students did not do as well or better. Just that I became curious when one earlier poster commented about his reglious relative and the fact that those children were receiving poor homeschooling.

It appears that some homeschooling parents have a major chip on their shoulders. The good ones are the ones who are suffering from those who aren't qualified to housebreak a dog, much less educate a child. It's up to those parents to make sure this does not happen or the good HSers are the ones to suffer.

But don't cover up for them. Expose them. Ensure there is testing of all students, and not just a review or standard curriculum. Anything can be faked... test results cannot.

I'm sure we've discussed this before. Has your other name been banned, or are you just trying to argue anonymously? You have always been against homeschooling, and someone successfully debating your arguments does not equate to the person having a chip on her shoulder. Newsflash: There are some very smart and well-spoken (written) ladies on this board and homeschooling their children.

Testing, IMO, will not solve the problem of inadequate homeschooling any more than "No Child Left Behind" has solved the problem of inadequate public education. From my days as a homeschooler, I would argue that a portfolio actually is more burdensome than a testing requirement. In PA, both testing and portfolio are required, and portfolios are reviewed by appointed representatives of the districts. The homeschooling parents sweat the portfolios much more than the tests. What would you do when a homeschooled child doesn't pass the standardized test? Send him to public school? What if he doesn't pass the standardized test when he's been in public school? Where will you send him then?

I'm not against a system of checks and balances, but over-regulating homeschooling will not prevent some kids from falling through the cracks. That's what CYS is for.

The turn in conversation reminds me of my recent research into history curriculum.
We've used Story of the World as our spine, and supplemented with a lot of research. We are about to finish up Vol1. I was beginning to get lazy and was hoping to find something that is more complete and yet as diverse. However most History text that are home school friendly are written from a Christian prospective. Many of them being from a creationism/new earth standpoint, and taking the position that conquering savages in the name of God is a noble thing etc.
While reading reviews on Amazon and other review sites, I realized that SOTW vol 2 is the book for us. Many Catholics were complaining that the book is too Protestant. Many Protestants were complaining that the book recognizes other religious as legitimate, taught the basic tenants of such religions etc.

The K12 religion had a basic history of the beginning of major religions in its K or 1st grade curriculum (don't remember which). It was fantastic, including geographical and chronological information about the origins of the world's major religions and their basic tenets. I was so impressed and a bit embarrassed to admit that I learned much from teaching my son that year.

Momof2--I am regularly impressed and somewhat embarrassed about how much I am learning while teaching my kids. I am also very often blown away by what my kids retain that I know I didn't know at their ages. We were watching the show Universe from the History Channel tonight (We had recorded it) and when they made reference to the first astronomer who had seen Saturn, all three kids yelled out "Gallileo!" Then DS 5 says,"And he drawed it like a Hidden Mickey." Now the grammar is bad, but hey--how could I be more proud?!:rotfl: There were several other things they could remember re: astronomy and we finished our study of it at least 3 months ago.

Okay, I was going to let it slide, but when you really push it--your sentence "they go straight in the trash" should read "into the trash.":goodvibes

Disneymom3, I looked this up, and I was grammatically correct. The words "in" and "into" can be used interchangeably, per dictionary.com.

Stupid dog woke me up and I can't get back to sleep.

Did that keep you up all night? You looked it up at 5 in the morning. "Into" sounds better. JMO.

FWIW - and I'm done with this topic. I have no other user name and never did. I am using the same name I used on Prodigy, and there are several people here who can recall that.

I'm too old to play the IBB name game, nor do I have a dog in this hunt or really care. I was curious. If you don't like getting questioned about those children who may fall thru the cracks, well, sorry, pass on the topic. It's seems that you keep on going back to all the successes and refuse to discuss what is being done about the failures. That's pretty telling - and a common debating technique. If you don't want to give the answer, change the subject.

I know there are some very very qualified people on this board doing an excellent job homeschooling their children and never said there were not. I even used, as an example, a good friend of mine, with a gifted son now in MIT, who was homeschooled. Please stop putting words in my mouth.

But some folks seem to have an issue discussing the exceptions - those children not getting an appropriate education from less than qualified parents.

Perhaps the answer IS to put them in public schools and hold those schools and parents accountable.

So, my question is and always was... what is being done about those children in states without testing who are not getting an appropriate education?

Nothing..You do here about the occasional intervention by CPS however.
Kids fall through the cracks in Public and Private school too though.
