*** Homeschool List ***

Can't resist.....LOL

here's a bit on just "who" HSLDA is,what they represent and why some of us wouldn't go near them with a 100ft pole
http://hsislegal.com/

Clearly antagonistic language here. If you have an opposing viewpoint, that's clearly your right to state it. However, maybe, just maybe, you could have used some more honey here and less vinegar. You catch more flies with honey...;)

As I said to Sha lyn, I only put what I thought and that is that the group that I mentioned has done and can do lots to help some homeschoolers. Clearly, some people disagree. I get that. I don't see why my vouching for my having a good experience with a group is a problem with you. surely, every group has it's allies and its enemies. You clearly don't like the group and that's okay too.

How has HSLDA helped you?

You call that antagonistic? I'm sorry if you find this offensive, but you must really have a thin skin.

No, I don't have thin skin and there's no need to go on the offensive with me here. What I'm saying is that you could have worded your opposing viewpoint in a nicer manner. It's like I tell my kids, I can't hear what you're saying if you're using yucky words or yelling...all I hear is the yucky words and screams, not the message. Perhaps if you had phrased things in a nicer manner, helpmate would not have felt attacked. You catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar. A simple "Here's an opposing viewpoint to HSLDA" would have sufficed.

When there is any group as large and diverse as this one on a public forum there will be disagreements. There are families who homeschool for religious reasons, for partly religious reasons, and with no religious reasons whatsoever. There are support groups that follow along all three lines as well. Each of us have our own opinions on which is right, but we also need to be tolerant with those who differ in those opinions. I haven't been here long, but have seen an abundance of respect shown to all regardless of their beliefs, it's a shame that referencing an outside agency has changed that. For the benefit of everyone reading this section who may or may not be new and feel awkward posting in the first place, or those of us who just want a positive reinforcement of our choice to homeschool, can we please agree to disagree as to the existence of HSLDA and what they do or do not stand for? :hippie:

:::slowly :rotfl2: climbing down off of my soapbox, nope..not jumping, just can't get moving that fast this morning:::

.... I just downed a cup of coffee and a protein bar. I'll jump down for both of us...LOL

salsa is made from veggies LOL... sounds like a balanced breakfast to me. You just need to throw some cheese on there

I"m taking notes! Mostly, because I like honey so much better than flies!

Well put! And I do agree to disagree! Didn't mean to cause confusion. Was only trying to help!

only if it's raw honey and cider vinegar. It's a great combination to help with seasonal allergies.

B-75. Home Schooling
The National Education Association believes that home schooling programs based on parental choice cannot provide the student with a comprehensive education experience. When home schooling occurs, students enrolled must meet all state curricular requirements, including the taking and passing of
assessments to ensure adequate academic progress. Home schooling
should be limited to the children of the immediate family, with all expenses being borne by the parents/guardians. Instruction should be by
persons who are licensed by the appropriate state education licensure
agency, and a curriculum approved by the state department of education should be used. The Association also believes that home-schooled students should not participate in any extracurricular activities in the public schools.
The Association further believes that local public school systems
should have the authority to determine grade placement and/or credits earned toward graduation for students entering or re-entering the public school setting from a home school setting. (1988, 2006)

Here's a petition that's been started:

I knew there was a reason I didn't join the NEA when I was a PS teacher. Any thoughts/comments?

Hi everyone. I have stated to research homeschooling my little guys until at least the 1st grade. DH is very wary. Any good books that I can get him(he loves to read so I figure that is the easiest way to win him over). We are in Louisiana(New Olreans/Westbank specifically)

I would love tips, advice, anything...

Thanks!

"Dumbing Down our Kids" by Charles J. Sykes is a classic. Your library should be able to get it. As far as the positive aspects, there are dozens out there, anymore. If you don't want to scare the pants off of him, stay away from any about unschooling, or Moore's books like "Better late than Early." His books are on the mark about developmental stages, but I thought my husband would collapse the first time he opened one!

What converted my husband, was the idea that individual learning is quicker and more efficient than a classroom having to deal with the lowest functioning student. I don't know about the groups around there, but the other mom's and kids are a huge blessing in our lives!

Good luck!

We HS after 6th grade, so currently I have 2 in PS and 2 teens at home. When I tell the K-6 teachers at the PS that the older two are being hs, they are generally very interested and supportive! :thumbsup2

Our neighbor is the principal for the highschool and his wife teaches third grade. I was a little bit worried when we moved in, until they told me that were they starting their family again, she would stay home to hs. They are wonderfully supportive. And I support them. They get my "box tops", and my scholastic points.

None of the teachers in my immediate circle are thrilled with the NEA. It would be like me agreeing with everything the Psych groups come up with!:rotfl:

Large organizations are so much about self promotion and not at all about common sense.
