Homemade Holiday Presents! Lets help each other! Ideas WANTED!

www.picotextiles.com

I don't know anything about this company, but I came across it on several sites that had directions for making the no sew fleece blankets. They had quite a few nice no-pill prints for $2.95 a yard and had free shipping. They had other designs for higher prices ($7.95 a yard, and I think the blankets require two yards). I'm thinking about giving them a try.

If you register for email on Hancock Fabric - I got fleece last year in the fall for $3 a yard.

I bought fleece for almost 8€/yard! :scared1:

I am looking forward to making the blanket and some other things mentioned in this thread (I am subscribing!).

Everyone's ideas are so creative!:thumbsup2

Idea for fleece:

Look in the bedding sections of stores - you can OFTEN find fleece blankets for MUCH cheaper than fleece by the yard. Just cut the blanket up for your needs.

I know WalMart has a fleece sheet set (I live in Maine, and OH does that sound nice for winter!) that was about $25 for a queen - included fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillow cases!

No Walmart here...

I wish fleece was easier to find. I went around several fabric stores until I found one that actually sold it. It only had red, green and blue so I got red and green, thinking they are coordinating Christmas colours! I wish they had some fleece fabric with prints but no luck.:sad1:

I'm going to try and find a set like the one you mentioned.:thumbsup2

Our fabric place has all fleece on sale 50% off. The original price is around 10-12 for character. Not sure how I am going to do it. I know that I am making 2 for toddler beds and 2 for twin beds. The toddler ones needs to be 1 5/6 yards per color and the twins need to be 2 yards per color. My friend is a seamstress who makes many of these and that is where I got my measurements from. Going on Wed. to get some.

An earlier post gave me an idea of giving home made dinners as gifts. Maybe some of the creative people here can help me come up with details and a great way to package it.

First--what to make...Lasagna is the first thing that comes to my mind, but I'd love to try something a little more creative. Any good freezable (and easy) casserole recipes out there?

Second--how to package it...A Pyrex with a cover would be really nice, but a throwaway pan would be less expensive. Plus, how do you keep it frozen during the gift exchange? Maybe put it in a styrofoam cooler and tie a big bow on it.

Thanks for the help--Love all the great ideas!

ETA: Obviously I posted before reading the entire thread. I now see some great ideas on giving meals as gifts. Keep 'em coming!

I have seen on this thread several different ideas for those clear glass ornaments. but last yr. I made them w/ popcorn in them. It takes a little practice and I had a few broken one but you put seeds in the ornament and put it in a paper bag. Pop in microwave and you have a cute ornament w/ popcorn in it. Time varies by your microwave and I noticed w/ mine that the more I did the time for each one after changed so you just have to hang out by it and wait for it to be done.
http://www.hgtv.com/cr-occasions/calls-popcorn-ornament/index.html

It also has directions for one w/ mini pinecones in it, ice cream ornaments and the candy train

I love this idea--easy and inexpensive. It would be a good decoration to include in a movie gift basket too.

I've decided to make home made dog cookies and bird seed cut outs for our friends and family..

Dog cookies
2 1/2 cup flour
3/4 cup dry milk powder
1/2 cup veggie oil
2 tbs brown sugar
2 veggie bouillion cubes disolved in 3/4 cup boiling water
1/2 cup chopped carrots
1 egg

Preheat oven to 300 degrees, Mix all ingredients into a ball and roll out to about 1/4 inch think. Cut with cookie cutter (dog bone shape is cute :lovestruc ) and place on ungreased cookie sheet. bake for 30 mins

Bird Seed Cut outs
3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup water
3 tbls corn syrup
4 cups any type of bird seed

in large bowl mix all ingredients into a ball and roll out to desired thickness on a sheet of wax paper. Cut into round cookie shapes and make a small hole in each for the hanger. Let dry 4-6 hours or over night make sure to turn often so both sides dry. use a piecs of yarn for hangers the next day and hang in trees..

Love this idea!! Am looking for a bone cutter !!

Anyboby remember the "leather" pencil holders or vases? I'm going to have my little ones do these for gifts this year!

Take an old can, bottle or vase and cover with ripped bits of masking tape and color with shoe polish for faux leather!

My Mom did this to our kitchen when I was younger. She did the cabinets and the table. :rotfl2: It looks nice, better than what it sounds like. I think she used paint instead of the shoe polish, but I remember all of the tape.

The fleece for the "no sew" blankets/pillows....JoAnn's, Michaels usually has a 40% coupon-use that to get your fleece. Borrow coupons from friends and do several trasactions or go over several weeks if you have to do it this way. Walmart's usually cheaper. See if you have a discount fabric store or check Ebay for a deal too.

To make the no sew pillow I *think* you just buy the pillow form from like a Walmart and get enough fleece to go around that with enough room for you to cut your pieces to tie together.

This is a super great thread! I love all of the ideas!! :goodvibes

Just an FYI ~ I have found character fleece & plain fleece on Ebay for reasonable prices including shipping so watch there as well.

Just bumpin' to move this up. GREAT IDEAS

This year I am going to Make tree skirts. I am going to get all the kids in the family together. Paint their hands with gold glitter paint and have them put their hand prints on the tree skirts. I am going to put their names and the year under the handprints and give it to great grandparents and grandparents

I think my fav homemade gifts were trivets. I found white tiles at the craft store, used paint that you bake to set and painted DDs hand so we made a handprint on it. Added her name and the year and gave it to the grandma's and grandpa. She is 11 now and they still have and use them. I think for the grandparents this year I am going to have all the kids do handprints in a baking dish and do the same thing.

Do you paint the inside or the outside of the dish? Also is this dishwasher safe?

This is a great idea, I'm a Mom not a grandparent and I would still like one of these :thumbsup2 .

This also reminds me, one year I bought a plain white sweatshirt and put the kids handprints on it with primary colored fabric paint with their names under them then wrote something like "World's #1 Grandma" or something on it. We also made one for DH. They hold up well in the wash, I wash DH's with bleach and he's had it for about 5 years and still wears it. I hope that's not a repeat, I haven't read everything in this thread.

Bump!

More ideas?

Thanks so much for those posted already!

I'm going to try home made sugar scrubs.

1 clear plastic jar
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
lemon juice (optional)
scented essential oils (optional)

Mix together! Give as gifts! I'm going to give these with some cookies I'm going to make. :hippie:

I'm going to make "sock dogs" for some of my family members :thumbsup2

If you google it you will get lots of ideas. I'm doing the first on with DS11 and have learned that you should make short legged dogs instead of long legged dogs!:rotfl: So as soon as I can find some christmassy looking socks, like red stripes, etc. I will make several.

Magnetic Memo Board - a simple computer project that could easily be done in Word, although we used Microsoft Publisher. We selected a digital photo of the recipient & some clip art, typed in an appropriate phrase like "A little reminder..." Print out on good card stock and have it laminated. Stick on some small pieces of adhesive magnet on the back. We also punched a hole and attached a dry-erase marker with a pretty ribbon. (You could put a piece of magnet on the marker, instead).
love this idea

In the past I've gotten holiday labels from www.myownlabels.com that said "Happy Holidays from the ____ family".
thanks for the link

will check it out

89. Survival kits! Motherhen posted some of these. There's a great web site with a TON listed. Christmas, and just about any other occassion you can think of. In the interest of space I'm posting the link. You can find the lists here:

http://www.budget101.com/survival_kits.htm
I found this at organizedchristmas.com.
thanks for all the ideas

We have made coffee stir spoons... you take heavy weight disposable spoons, and dip them into melted choclate or candy melts, then befor they set we dipped them into crushed candy...peppermints, sprinkles, plain and color rock sugar. Then into cello bags and tied with ribbons. We used dark, milk, and white choclate, and the different chips- butterscotch, mint, cinnamon.. which we got at Publix.

Also I didn't see if there was a kids Art basket on the list. I get extra school supplies when crayons are 10 to 25 cents and then use a lot of my left over sewing suff, like ribbon, pom poms, yarn, buttons, felt, and so on, and a few other things like card stock, paper, and dollar store stuff like a low temp glue gun, ballons, stickers, paint brushes, popsicle sticks. and put it into a plastic tub with a top. I also found reciepts for flour moddeling clay and "goop" and put the ingreds in with the directions.
I might have to make these for hot chocolate
It is kind of like "I Spy" in a jar and is a pirate puzzle jar. Fill a jar w/40 small items and millet (bird seed)...leave a little space between top of jar and fill. Glue the lid shut and decorate w/a pirate theme. Make a checklist of the items in the jar and laminate. Attach list to jar with dry erase pen and the following instructions:

Some pirates got all mixed up
and did things the wrong way round
they put their treasures in the jar
and buried the map in the ground
their treasure was some silly stuff
like nuts and screws and beads
then dearl old polly parrot added all her extra seeds
so find the 40 items here
no two are quite the same
don't open up the jar though
as that would spoil the game

Can also make w/rice or sand and special themes, like Halloween, Christmas, Disney, beach, baby, back to school, etc.

This would be a fun coffee table item, rainy day project, boo gift, etc. I am looking forward to hunting down all the little items for this.
Any one made this as a Disney one if so what did you put in it?

So I desided that I was going to make a new one! It wouldn't take the place of the orginal one, but it was better then nothing!

This is what I do...
Get the Sandylion Disney Rub-Ons... they have MM, Minnie, Cindy, Ariel,( I can't find it locally!), Pooh and friends and a few others...

Get UN-BREAKABLE balls!!! Or what you want... But I'm not taking a chance again, and I am going to have my 5yo DN help....
Line up the rub on where you want on the ball. Rub it on. Done!

Of course, I will prob. use a little glitter/glue and maybe a sprakle glaze or something...

The transfers are about $3 a sheet, and I can get 3 to 6 ornaments from each sheet, and the balls are at Wal-Mart the unbreakable ones are 18 to 24 in a $9 box. So the ornaments will be under a buck each! My niece will love them!
Are these like the temporary tattos

Did you use a cookie cutter

These are some great ideas!!

One of the things I really enjoy is taking photos & making DVDs out of them on our computer. This year I think I will do one for each of the grandparents, sort of a year in review of my kids. I have done this before for friends & they always seem to like it.
I like this idea.
