Do you make a homecoming mum for you5 daughter or your sons GF?

I grew up in Ohio and never heard of them before moving here to Texas. I have to admit however... I am getting pretty darn good at making those Mums. ;)

Go Eagles!!

i make them for friends and family. if you get really good you can sell them and make good money this month

What is a homecoming mum??

We had a window in the commons area were the seniors sold them. They were huge, white mums and really nice red, white and blue ribbons. There was a blue "HC" made from pipecleaners inserted in the middle of the mum. School initials, it sounds corny, but it was the thing.

That was a nice flashback!

I have to admit I find them very ugly. It's definitely a regional thing. I'm sure if I lived in Texas I'd be all over it, but luckily we never did it at my school!

One of the girls in my sorority was from Texas, and we all loved to tease her about the mums!

Go Eagles!!

Grew up in Missouri and made my first one last week for dd. Geesh are THEY expensive!

Went to HS in Texas...yup, definately a Texas thing.

Some start out quite simple...you can't imagine how big/expensive/gaudy that some get!!! Our school had a policy that you had to tape the cow bells during school hours because they drove the teacher nuts. The next year there was a limit put on how many mums you could wear. Some poor girls looked like they could tip over due to the weight!

I lived in several different states growing up, and never saw anything like the mums we have here in Texas anywhere else. DD is a cheerleader for pee wee football, last year we made her mum ourselves (actually my crafty DH did). This year we had one made for her and for DS's girlfriend...which I didn't see coming at age 11, but that is a topic for another thread. :earseek:

Like they say, "Everything's bigger in Texas."

Not looking forward to when we need these, my 14yo DD was asking about them the other day.

They seem to have gotten out of hand, it is no longer a simple flower but a huge thing.

Where do they wear them anyway? Do they need one when they are in 9th grade? (just trying to prepare myself for next year ;) )

I would say they are almost a requirement in 9th grade, because nearly everyone will have one. Here at least, they wear them to school the day of the homecoming game (middle and high school only), to the parade, and to the game. After you pay that much for a big fake flower and a bunch of ribbon, you want to get as much wear out of it as possible!

We do mums in SC, too! What a great memory! They were bigger than my face! :flower:

OK Now I am curious Is this just for homecoming? I know someone mentioned making one for an 11 year old. Do they do this for other events?

We had them when we were in high school but they don't have them now. I think its because the school is smaller.

I did, however just go pick up the wrist corsage for the Homecoming Dance tonight for J.C.'s date.

It's just for the homecoming game. I grew up outside of Dallas, and it was a requirement that you have one. My mom wasn't the type to waste money on something that silly, so I always hated it when I didn't have a boyfriend to buy me one at homecoming time.

While I always wanted one, I did find them rather goofy and liked the ones that weren't quite so long. I prefered a smaller one that only went down to my lower waist (but with lots of fun things hanging off it :)). The "best" ones went down to my ankles and were just way too heavy.

We have a new high school with only 9th and 10th grades so they are having a "Forthcoming" instead of a "Homecoming" in a couple of weeks. I have bought all the stuff to make my daughter's mum in case she doesn't get asked to the dance. If she does, I'm already prepared for the boy's mum. FYI, for those that don't know, the boy's wear a shorter version on their arms.

Mums were the real thing back when I was in high school not the fake ones we have now.

We had them in HS in Illinois, back in the 70's. They were HUGE, and they were given to you by your date when he asked you...SO, no mum, no date. It was like a scarlett letter. I mean, there was no way to hide the fact that you had not rec'd this 10 lb white flower... they practically suffocated you, but you wore it otherwise you were a loser. You wore them the Friday before the dance and to the HC game the next day. Ah yes...just another pressure tactic in H.S. I am grateful DD school does not do this. Way more kids go to the dance and go stag/ in groups as often as with a date. I remenber even having to pin the goofy thing to my marching band uniform...talk about extreme geekdom!

How much do you sell them for?

Locally, the flower shops charge $15-20 each.

WOW That's cheap!! Here a really really simple one can go for the very least $30-35. & for a guy about $20-25

I sold this one for $85 & that's a really good price, I've seen them with less then I put on this one for about $100
