Home Security?

We do not have a system in our house. There is one here but it's not hooked up. The previous owner took it upon himself to rip the entire box out so we would need to start from scratch anyways. However, DH got a gun for christmas and I just recently purchased one for myself so we are covered for while we are here. I have been thinking of getting a system for when we are not around though.

Many insurance companies require proof of monitoring before you qualify for the discount. If you file for the discount, but don't actually have the alarm monitored, I would be concerned it could impact your coverage in the event you need to file a claim.

I was never asked to show proof, however you make an excellent point for the what ifs...

Yikes! No guns here. Too many kids in my house. Even if there weren't I don't think I'd be comfortable with one in it. I will have to rely on my lethal kickboxing hands and feet. :)

My DH travels a lot. Our alarm system makes me feel much more secure at night. Every external door and downstairs window is hooked up to the alarm.

My insurance company required a certificate from ADT showing we had the system. (ADT automatically provides that.) 5% discount from my company. Nothing major.

I'm thinking about installing a system, but I read online that the wireless ones ADT etc. installs are almost worthless b/c if the intruder rips off any part of the system (the keypad, or whatever), the whole system fails! Does anybody know if this is true? I'd hate to pay ADT $37 a month for nothing! :sad2:

We have one. We currently use ADT, at our previous house we had a local company. We use it every night, during the day when we are away and also if the kids are home alone (oldest 16) I like them to set it. I would not be without one again, I just feel more comfortable. I think we pay around $19 a month.

I used to be the same way but given my husband was raised around guns, I got used to it! We don't have kids but we will have a safe very soon.

We were robbed 25+ years ago. We were out of the house at the time, and our next door neighbour was having a huge party at the time, so there was a lot of noise. It was probably someone who had robbed a house before. When we asked the police about installing an alarm system, they told us that someone really intent on breaking into a house would find a way--and--alarm systems really aren't a deterrent. A housebreaker will get into a house, take stuff, and be out again in less than 5 min. This is much faster than any meaningful response can be. So, what you want to do is make getting into your house more difficult than getting into your neighbour's house. The housebreaker will simply select the easier target. (Which kind of makes you view your neighbours in a completely different way). I think the information about alarm systems is out of date now, but I do still believe that a burglar can be in and out of a house before the police arrive.
