DW and I are thinking about joining and I had a question. How many people routinely stay at their home resort? If you want to stay at another DVC property I know you can book 7 months in advance, but are they normally available or hard to get.

My reasoning is that SSR seems to have the longest contract, through 2054. To me that makes the most sense to buy because you own it the longest. Problem is, I probably like the theming the least of all the DVC resorts.

Does it make sense to buy at a place but routinely stay elsewhere?

What are veterans thoughts? Thanks

I am thinking to join as well. But I will buy into the one I like to stay the most.

Well unless you just want to stay at your home reosrt and nowhere else then I would say to buy where you want to stay.
But if you are flexible and would be happy anywhere then you are okay to buy somewhere else.

I know if it were me I would by AKV or SSR right now just because of them expiring later than others and OKW is also the same way right now if you buy through DVC

But wth the incentives they are running right now they are very attractive.

A POLL might be better...just a suggestion.

Anyhow, We have taken 5 trips using DVC points. Out of the 5, we have doen the following:
1 -stayed at NON-home resort BWV (due to availability on short notice)
1 -trade (traded into Cancun-Royal Resorts for a 10th anniversary trip)
3 -stayed at HOME resort BCV....in which twice we did a split stay to 'experience' the others (VB & VWL).

We decided we REALLY LIKED AKV, so we are now owners there as well. BTW, AKV also has a longer contract than the others. Good luck with your decision.

FYI, AKV contracts are through 2057, and the new extended OKW contracts (directy through DVC) go through 2057 as well (I think, I know they added 15 years).

The contract expirations are:

BCV, BWV, HHI, OKW (resale), VB, VWL: Jan 31, 2042
SSR: Jan 31, 2054
AKV, OKW (through Disney): Jan 31, 2057

I believe that when choosing your home alot of your decision will be determined by when you vacation. We own at SSR and BWV. We have never stayed at SSR, but do stay at BWV alot. We use our BWV points when we need to book at the 11 month window (October and December), but use our SSR points when we book at the 7 month window during the less popular times of the year (when kids are still in school). We don't travel during any holidays and we avoid June and July. THis has worked for us over the last 3 years. I would stay at SSR if I needed to, but everytime I call for a reservation for my early May trip, late January trip, or late August trip, everything has been available so I've booked other DVC locations. I agree about buying where you want to stay, but I want to stay everywhere. It's not always easy keeping up with your DVC contract and rules, and not everyone can juggle 6 different contracts at one time. I have enough problems keeping my 2 contracts correct and within the guidelines all of the time. So if you want to travel during the popular times and the 11 month window is a must for you, then yes buy the resort you plan to stay in, if not and you are flexible, then buy the resort that has the best deal!! (in terms of length of contract, incentives and price).

General rule of thumb it to buy where you like to stay the most. The 11 month window for your home resort is very important when booking for holiday season, i.e. Christmas/New Years, or Spring Break/Easter. We own at BWV, it is our ultimate favorite, AKV is our second favorite, but even when we added on, we did so at BWV because it is where we choose to stay the most. If we want to stay at AKV we will (which we are doing for one night of this upcoming trip), booking at the seven month window.
I book our trips at the 11 month window at our home resort of BW, and than at the 7 month mark, I'll call to switch it. So far we've gotten everything we wanted, once was OKW, twice now for HH, and first time for AKV. We don't really have any interest in BCV because it is just across from BWV, so we'll most likely never request that (and BWV standard view is lower in points), we will definitely stay at AKV again in the future, and once I'd really like to try WLV - I think it's such a gorgeous resort.

Anyway, just my two cents. Good luck with your decision and happy planning.
