Home movie party and 3D glasses question

Will the black theater 3D glasses work on a 3D movie on my regular TV? Or do I need to get those red and blue ones? I read something on ebay that says the black ones only work with polarized movies..no clue what that means though

we saved our theater 3d glasses hoping we could use them at home when the superbowl had the 3d commercials. They didn't work. Thank goodness we had the red and blue ones handy.
