We had a fantastic cruise overall but did have some low points I wanted to ask others about...

Just a few highlights (there were so many!):
Palo - both dinner and brunch. I see it recommended frequently that first time cruisers should skip Palo and just do the MDR but I completely disagree. I can't say enough great things about the food or service. We loved our waiter - he was easily my favorite person on the ship - and it was a wonderful treat to escape to. The table next to us was dining there every night and I now see why. We did night 2 (pirate night) and the MDR was a big letdown after that LOL. Because it was a 4 night, we still got to experience all 3 MDR's and finished Palo in time for the pirate party. I had neglected to do research on what people normally tip and guest services was no help - what do y'all usually do?

Shows - I knew going in that these would be great but I think they were better than we expected - the special effects were especially impressive. I enjoyed all three but Disney Dreams was my favorite. More about this in a bit.

Serenity Bay - Not having to battle for a lounge chair was so lovely; there was plenty for all. The water was crystal clear (though very very shallow - you could walk way out and barely be above your ankles) and warm enough to sit a lounge chair in. I was not impressed with the lunch but loved all other aspects of it. I just wish they had a cruise that stopped at it everyday! :goodvibes

Disappointments:
During the nighttime shows, I was shocked by how many adults carried on full blown conversations through the entire show. I wondered why there were there, if they didn't want to watch - they could have sat right outside the theater. It was really hard to hear the show over them. The first night, I finally turned around and asked if they could stop talking and they apologized and did. The second show, however, was a mess. It was Tangled so the theater was packed (standing room only). The man behind us loudly talked to members of his party (7-8 people so he was talking down the row) through the entire show. Someone on one side of us turned around and shh'ed him. Did nothing. I turned around and just looked, hoping it would help. Nope. My mom finally turned around and asked if he could whisper so we could hear the show - boy, that was a mistake.

He loudly said that he had kids - she told him the kids weren't talking, he was (we literally heard not a word from the kids). So then he started... yelling at her that it was a Disney cruise, she was old and should go home, dropped the F bomb a couple times, and just went on and on for about 30 seconds. Mom had already turned back around so it was just at the back of our heads. People rows in front of us were turning around to see what was going on and I have no doubt the performers heard it, too. It was so embarrassing and uncomfortable as he was clearly unhinged. Someone in his party asked him to quiet down and he ramped back up about an old lady is not going to ask him to be quiet and he can talk if he wants. Obviously no one on our row said another word to them after that and the whole family slipped out before the show ended (I was terrified he was going to launch into another attack when the lights came up).

Later that night, we told our table mates (two women, both cruising solo) about the experience. I specifically asked if the rude guests, especially in shows, was the norm and the woman who had done several Disney cruises said that it was par for the course. The other woman had had several experiences already with really rude guests, too. Both of them skipped every show and instead watched it on the in room TV just to avoid the entire thing.

Disney obviously can't control their guests but I did wish they asked people to refrain from using cell phones or having conversations in the show. Maybe many guests don't have experiences with live theater and don't realize it can ruin someone's experience? The children were occasionally loud but I have no issue with that - at all. Many are very young and the show is long.

On the last night, we sat with our back to the sound booth so no one was sitting behind us and had a great experience. Wouldn't typically sit that far back but it was worth knowing no one would be having a family reunion in the row behind us

I also saw Moana in the movie theater and once again, a group of adults carried on a full blown conversation through most of it. :confused3

Has anyone else experienced that? To be honest... it makes me hesitant to book another Disney cruise. I've not experienced anything like that on the other two cruise lines I've sailed with. The shows are a really important part of the cruise for us - we didn't want to just watch on the TV - but it seemed you couldn't escape from the behavior.

This was was way longer than I intended - I'm so sorry! I really appreciated all the advice and tips I picked up pre-cruise and would love to hear from some of you veteran cruisers about both Palo tips and guest behavior.

Only ate at Palo once and I was having motion sickness at the time and actually didn't eat anything. I drank mint tea the whole time. My husband ate and had some wine. He tipped $20.

I haven't experienced the talking through the shows. I don't go to all of the shows, but I have never had an experience like that. The movie theater has always been chaotic. There are people talking, kids bouncing the entire row of seats, babies crying..... Just par for the course on a Disney thing.

Ugh. I cringed reading all that. I am so sorry. I feel people definitely think, "Well, heck, I spent all this money on this cruise, I'm going to do gosh darn what I please". I really feel that way, this is just one example. I'm sorry about your experience. I do the looking- over- my- shoulder then shushing, and unfortunately, it never seems to work. We had one show where there was a large extended family, English was not their first language, certainly not the children's. They were literally translating the entire show to their children the entire time. What a mess. I wish there was a polite and acceptable way to ask people to pipe down I just don't know what that is! Unfortunately these are also the people that feel no shame saving 9 seats front and center when only 3 show up. I'm so sorry, and I hope that you are left with also very good memories of your cruise! Hopefully the good has outweighed the bad!

I havent had people talk in the shows before that i remember but that would be a bummer as we like the shows as well.

Palo is always wonderful and the Magic is our favorite Palo in the fleet. Felice the manager always gives us a wonderful table and Sylvester our server makes the dining experience so enjoyable.

I've never experienced something that severe in our 4 Disney cruises. Occasional kids outbursts are normal, but adults who should know better, never seen that. I wouldn't let it stop you from booking again. Be sure to go on the Fantasy next so you can see Aladdin!

I obviously can't speak for anyone but me, but no, I have not experienced anything like you described in my 5 DCL cruises. To me it is very surprising to the point of being unbelievable or exaggerated. I guess I don't understand why you didn't seek the assistance of a CM as the obnoxious guests appeared to be creating a disturbance.

If you are so concerned about loud people in the theaters, perhaps you are best to sail with another cruise line.

We go to EVERY show, EVERY cruise. I can honestly say in our experience that is NOT the norm. Mostly people were respectful and quiet during the shows. In the past people used to be able to film the show and that was annoying (seeing dozens of screens lite up) but now you are not allowed to (some still sneak it) but overall we find the shows wonderful to watch. Of course no one can account for people with no class (and that has nothing to do with income). Some people are just ignorant and rude. He had no right to act like he did and retaliate like that.

I hope that experience does not discourage you from attending any of the shows on a future cruise.

We do love Palo as well.

MJ

I agree with @cruisehopeful in the movie theater. It can be a mixed bag due to the fact that people can come and go at anytime.

So glad you enjoyed serenity bay. You should totally check out the Fantasy cruise May 17, 2017. It is a 3 day cruise with 2 stops at Castaway Cay (it is also the only place they are stopping at).

we wanted to do that cruise so bad but I have a DD that is graduating high school so we had to pass. :(

We also experienced some of this behavior on our last cruise. Not to your extent, though. I do think you should have gotten a CM to handle that man.

A Dad with a crying infant completely ruined the first 30 minutes of Moana for me despite repeatedly turning around and asking him to take the baby out. I heard absolutely none of the dialogue. Then his 3 seats were replaced by a family, in the middle of the movie now, trying to position a booster and imploring their toddler to sit in it, when he'd rather physically object and slam into the back of my seat. No apology and they left after about 30 minutes of this, despite my glare.

I think people think these entertainments are "free" so they can do what they want.

Never. We've been on 10 DCL cruises and I can say that I've never been in the theatre for shows, movies or presentations where we've had issues hearing because people are talking and I've certainly never had anyone confront me like that. Problem is, wherever you go, you'll find rude, obnoxious and inconsiderate people. You just happened to have some really bad luck.

We have been on 7 cruises so far and watch most of the shows - have started skipping Villains, but would never miss The Golden Mickeys :) I would say we have seen 16 shows overall in the theater...of those at least 8 of them had people loudly talking around us. Luckily, we have seen the shows so many times, we can just ignore; but if this was my first time watching them I would be really upset. It is usually the adults talking and not the kids. Only one time was really bad - the other times it was a 3 out of 10 on the annoyance factor. The one time a man was talking loudly - we got a CM who asked him to quiet down. He did for a minute and then when she was out of sight, talked louder and pointed the flashlight feature of his phone in my face. It was very scary - I am extremely non-confrontational, so we just left, but I was shaken. Went to the lobby and told them about the incident - they said they would look into it, but that was the last I heard. I was actually a bit scared that the guy was going to follow me out of the theater, but he was probably just drunk (in addition to being a jerk).

I am surprised by the number of posts on here that say they have never have it happen to them...maybe it is where we sit. As my mom is in a wheelchair, we have to sit in the back rows...I am sure up front it is probably better.

Soft talking I can handle, the lights on the phone bother me, I wish people would turn them off in the theater, but people constantly are checking their phone for messages...that is something that I think I will just need to get over as I don't think I can ever get people to part with their phone :)

Never seen anything like that. I've heard that type of behavior can be worse on shorter cruises, but I don't know.

At Palo, I try and tip to what a similar meal on land might be. I think $15-$30 has been my norm depending on drinks ordered.

That's just awful, what a shame that something like this impacted your vacation. You must have been looking forward to seeing Tangled for the first time.

From reading your description, I am left thinking that the incident either had to be a related to mental health or alcohol: it is that far removed from normal behavior. In either case, I can't imagine what a nightmare it would have been to be on vacation with this person, not to mention having to go home with him after the cruise. It would be very surprising to me if at least someone in his party didn't quietly feel equally terrible about what happened. Perhaps they did and managed to get him out of the theater early(?). If I had been in their place, I would have tried to find you later during the cruise, tell you how I felt, and offer you a sincere apology.

Sometimes, bad things happen that are out of our control, but then reaching out afterwards with a considerate gesture can make a big difference.

I've never experienced that, but I do believe your story and it's a shame that that guy was so horrid
!!!

We have had experiences like this in the past, just NOT to that extent!! :earseek:

It's the Priceline effect - two star people staying at a 4/5 star hotel!! Habits / Attitudes don't change.

And DCL is somewhat to blame. They are "afraid" of their customer base. They want everyone to INDIVIDUALLY have an EXCELLENT cruise - so pretty much whatever you want goes!! vs. the all of guests in total having the best cruise possible. Dress code for dinner - "But It's MY Vacation - I can wear whatever I want" - so over the past 18-19 years (already!!) DCL has gone from formal nights to dress up optional. From no shorts / swimsuits to anything goes in the MDR's. Palo - Jeans are allowed now :earseek::scared1: etc etc etc. Kids in the same club from ages 3 to 12 because "my kids possibly couldn't make friends be in different clubs" and so on and so forth ...

For Disney and the CM's it's all about getting the EXCELLENT Scores internally and externally, no matter the "cost"

Actually DCL is becoming a two star cruise at a 4 star price!!

Sorry for the rant!

There is been wide debate on this but we typically tip what the price of one meal costs. So at Palo, we tip $30 for two of us.

Wow- that is terrible! I really do not know what I would have done. That man obviously has problems! Never experienced anything like that - my only pet peeve in the theaters is when adults put their kids on their lap and then you can't see around them.
