Home at AKV...

Diane, do you find you need to be really tall to use the shower and sinks at AKL? I'm 5'7, and the shower/tub was cumbersome to get in and out of. Also, I wear contact lenses so I need to get close to the mirror while I'm putting them in. Again, it was a long reach, making me wish I were taller. I've never noticed this anywhere else within DVC we've stayed.

I know it seems like a nutty question, but when you said somthing about the tub/shower, I was wondering if this was your issue too?

Otherwise, I'm very envious of you and my fellow DVC'rs who are at WDW right now!:goodvibes Enjoy your stay!!

ok I had to LOL about the tub/shower being mentioned 2x already. I just got back from my first AKV stay and I had major issues getting in and out of that ridiculous combo. I'm just shy of 6' too so being tall doesn't help in the least! It's not natural and pretty dangerous IMO. I was expecting a seperate shower and tub so it was a bad surprise to find.

Same issue with getting close to the mirrors. Not enough light in those rooms either so using the full length wasn't much better.

(my stay wasn't horrible, just very different and my verdict is still out on AKV)

Diane, thanks for sharing your trip observations with us! I know you think highly of your past concierge stay.....I'm assuming that access to the concierge villas is close to the elevators (i.e no long hallway to get there). We'll be staying CL in August so just wondering how you get to them. Is it right off the lobby? The only time we stayed at AKV was just after the first group in Jambo opened. We had to walk down a hall to get to the elevator but then the villa was right around the corner. I guess now that all of Jambo is open the villas stretch all the way down the hallways.
The Concierge rooms are on the 6th floor and run along both sides of the lobby so the walkway that goes past your room overlooks the lobby. The lounge is above the front entrance to AKL, on the end of the lobby opposite from the large vine-covered windows.

someone was wondering what people pens are.

Well, in the event of fire, you have to evacuate. With zebra and kudu trail having animals on both sides, no easy place to evacuate. So, people pens are the evacuation route, else you would evacuate to the animal areas.

Here's a picture of one. The building would be on the left.

We're arriving at AKV on Wednesday and have a Savannah view studio. Can you please suggest a particular area to request so that we will have animals? TIA!!!

ALL of the savannas still have animals at this point. The sunset one included.

The big tub is very cumbersome to get in and out of, but I like the height of the counters. Now the placement of the sinks in those counters is another matter though. They are too far in from the front egde, so you can't help but splash water all over the counter when washing your face or hands.

Well, we have been here at AKV 5544/46 for 6 days, and there are definitely good and bad things here.

My latest "glitch" was in ordering and paying for the full cleaning for the 2 bedroom villa. We had one group of guests leaving and another coming in Friday, so I ordered a full cleaning for Friday on Thursday. First of all, the person I talked to at housekeeping couldn't understand what exactly I wanted. She kept trying to tell me it would be trash and towel only, and I kept trying to explain to her I wanted to pay for a full cleaning. Then she looked up the cost, and said I'd have to pay, which I acknowledged, and said I knew it to be $60. She then informed me she was putting a $130 charge forward, since we were in a TWO bedroom. I reminded her that the $60 charge WAS for the 2 bedroom. Okay, so now I'm a little skeptical that it will actually get done and will actually be charged correctly. Fast forward to Friday when we return to the room to find the beds made and trash cleaned up and fresh towels. I slightly questioned if the sheets had actually been replaced, since it did not look like they had been changed on our bed, and they had left the second blanket on the queen bed that my DD had put on the night before. Okay that's a problem, because now our incoming guests will not a blanket on the pull out.

THen I take a closer look and find that there stll cereal crumbs all over the carpet around the table, and the kitchen floor hasn't been swept OR mopped. Never mind that there is also the used soap still in the shower of the second bath. Now I'm REALLY starting to question if I got my full cleaning or not. More checking lead me to find the dishes had not been taken out of the dishwasher (I ran it when I left the room). A call to housekeeping and they were going to send a supervisor up. Well, instead of a supervisor we got the person who was supposed to have cleaned the room. I explained as best I could what had not been done, and she assured me the beds had been changed. I pointed out that I really thought the floors should be at least vacuumed and mopped. She then procdeeded to take a dry mop and push the crumbs from the kitchen floor onto the carpet, and vacuumed the traffic area of the carpet only. She didn't move the chairs or really mop the floor, but she did put the dishes away. Frankly, I didn't really expect her to do that part, but it occured to me that perhaps I didn't really KNOW what was supposed to be included in a "full cleaning".

For my mind, a "full cleaning" would include everything cleaned as it is for check in. I guess I was wrong. I can tell you that I will never again "pay" for a full cleaning. Next time I'll wash the sheets myself and do the cleaning too. As it was, I ended up re-doing the floors and the bathroom in the studio portion.

Now for more of the problems associated with a DVC within an existing hotel:
No one here seems to understand anything about DVC!! Even the room numbers seem to be a confusion. We were given our room number as 5546, but when I opened the door, it was the studio only. My key did unlock the 5544 door too, so I knew it was correct, BUT....When the phone rings either from the front desk or from anyone calling in, it only rings on the studio phone. That's kind of annoying for our guests and inconvenience for us. Plus, you can NOT ask anything about DVC here....they haven't got a clue!

Thanks for the updates Diane! Sorry to hear about the issues with the full cleaning. I wouldn't know what to expect either, however I'm a little funny in that I don't like housekeepers coming into my room - I'd rather clean it all myself - just give me the linens etc.

The new Kidani building will undoubtedly be much better with the DVC questions as it'll be dedicated to DVC with the few regular cash guests there. The day will come that I'll want to try V or C units though and for that it's back to Jambo.

Ok - but here's the most important thing - do they even say "Welcome Home ...." ?

Am looking at resales (think I'd like AKV but the cheaper SSR points are tempting), however if the DVC treatment is that poor at AKV I'll be tempted to buy elsewhere.

Hi, Diane! We just returned from last week at SSR but spent some time over at AKL having dinner at Boma and checking out the "atmosphere." We decided to do a small add-on at AKV and are really looking forward to the completion of Kidani so we can stay there next year.

I DO hope that Kidani is at least free of some of the issues that have caused you some frustration. Hope the sun is shining on you this week (it was chilly last week except during the mid part of the day). Still has to be better than Minnesota...it's still below zero here (but not as much as last week)!

Hope you have/had a wonderful relaxing week in spite of the difficulties. :goodvibes

I am enjoying hearing about your trip! We will be spending two nights at Kidani in May and a week concierge in Jambo in december.
I am curious. Is concierge the same for dvc as it is for cash guests? Do you get daily maid srvice and turndown service? Thank you and hope you are enjoying yor trip!!

Yes, I am assuming Kidani will be a different matter too....at least I hope so. There are so many good things about AKV (animals, decor, atmosphere), that I'd hate for the annoyances to become the focus.

We are indeed finally getting warm too! I think today it's supposed to be 80's!

We stayed in CL last March, and in theory you are supposed to get turndown and daily maid service. Frankly, I'm one who prefers not to have maid service. We actually did not get turndown either, and I'm not sure why. I know the first day it was because we were in the room taking showers and getting ready for a night out when the maid came to do the turn down at 4 p.m. I guess she thought we didn't want it at all after that, so we never actually got it.

Okay, so we are headed to our last full day at Jambo for this trip. The following is a rundown of what we have found as Pros, Cons, magic, and annoyances.

PROS:
*Magnificent views...
*Magnificent savannas and animals.
*Magnificent embiance
*Beautiful decor and theme.
*The beds here are MUCH better than the Fred Flinstone rocks we sleep on at OKW.
*The resort is very quiet with only the hall causing a slight bit of noise. Well except for the appliances that I'll address below.
*Animal care is unbelievable! The animal caretakers are monitoring the animals day and night with their little trucks and the hotel mounted cameras. We saw them out on the savannas cleaning up the eating areas and scooping poop frequently. As an animal caretaker myself (we have a kennel), I was quite impressed.
*Loved the location of the laundry in the unit. It is very convenient between the bedroom and the bathroom.
*Plenty of storage space even with the small closet. There are plenty of drawers in the master, and the large closet in the kitchen is very nice for storing coats and luggage.
* Nice to have a desk in the master.
*The kitchenette in the 2nd bedroom is nicer than at OKW and about on par with SSR.
*Bus service is VERY good here!

CONS:
*HATE the kitchen! It's definitely a one butt kitchen and the layout of the items in it is crazy and very inconvenient. If you make coffee and want a cup to put it in, you'll find it on the other end of the kitchen by the sink. If you want a drink of water at the sink and need a glass, you find it on the other end of the kitchen by the coffee maker!:confused3 There are very few utensils here, and you will NOT find a pancake spatula or anything to mix up the batter with. We asked for a spatula, and they brought us another skimmer (which I can't say would be of any help at all). It's dish shaped and has holes in it for skimming fat off of soups etc., but is absolutely useless for turning pancakes! This kitchen was enough of an annoyance, that I decided I wouldn't want to stay anywhere but CL level again here. I'm hoping Kidani will be different. Perhaps it's a plot to get us to eat out ALL the time.
*The long hallways. I vowed this would NOT ruin a trip for me, but it was a major annoyance. We are on Zebra trail out to the beginning of the last pod of rooms. I always feel like we are walking half way back to the park when we come "home". It did help a bit that there were animals to look at along the way and nice decor, but DH was so annoyed by it that his harping on it became a problem for me.
*Noisy appliances. I'm not sure if they purchased the cheapest thiing around or what, but the dishwasher is so loud it sounds like a B52 is landing in your room when it's on! The same goes for the washer in the laundry area. Perhaps I am spoiled by my Bosch at home that makes absolutely no noise at all, but this was really bad.
*HOUSEKEEPING! Okay, so we hear all the time about how bad housekeeping is at OKW on this board. We've only had housekeeping issues once at OKW, but I'm starting to look more at the detail here, and as DVC members, we are not getting our money's worth in this department. It used to be that Disney in general and DVC in specific had marvelous housekeeping standards. Now I feel they are on about the par of a Motel 6 or Holiday Inn. It's a "hit the high spots" kind of cleaning at best and a total avoidance of anything I would call even routine cleaning at worst. I'vd decided there is no need to worry about tipping for this kind of housekeeping. Perhaps the dark decor here makes it more noticeable, but the grime on the top edges of things kind of got to me this time. The dark walls in the toilet room were so covered in dust, they appeared to have a haze on them. Here again, it's probably a product of the dark paint color. I know the wall knicks would be less noticeable with lighter colors too, and that adds to the overall look of things. Our kitchen cupboards here had all the finish worn off the top of the doors under the sink.
*Large Jacuzzi with the shower in it. This will be gone at Kidani, but it's a major problem here. Just getting in this shower is difficult for us, and I was always afraid of having a fall when getting out. We also hated how the water pools on the granite next to the wall ...great place for mold.
*Lack of light...especially in the bathroom. It's very difficult to put on makeup in this bathroom. There just isn't enough light, and with the high counters, I can't get close enough to the mirror, so I have to go to the long mirror over on the end wall. That means there is nowhere convenient to place the makeup, so I'm constantly going back and forth (just like the kitchen). This whole place is in serious need of an efficiency expert to help them figure out where things should go!
*The sinks are placed too far in from the front edge of the counter. It makes washing your face or anything else difficult and messy, because you can't get close enough to the sink.
*TVs. Okay, it's nice to have the flat panel TVs, but these are not the best. The remotes are temperamental and will need to have the mode reset nearly every time you turn it on. The channel selectors wont let you put ini both numbers, so they pick up only on digit of 2 digit channels. All three TVs in the unit were the same way, so it wasn't an issue with just one set.
*Not enough waste baskets. There is no waste basket in the bedroom. You have to go to the bathroom to find one, and the only one in the living area is under the sink. Oh, and the recycle is in the living room....I put it under the island to get it out of the way. Who wants the recycles sitting out in the middle of the living room???
*Lack of understanding DVC. I get the impression here that DVC is barely tolerated much less understood. I kind of think the resort doesn't really want us here, and they are less than helpful.

I know I'll be back here at least every 3rd year. I really wanted to love this place, and the things that are good, I do love, but the negatives are pretty high for me right now. I just wish I could take the savanna and move it over to OKW!

Diane, I think you've been here a long time as I have. You're cracking me up, talking about the long hallways. Remember Rich Hyams and how he'd complain about the long hallways at Boardwalk? I've never stayed at Boardwalk, so AKL was my first experience with the long hallways. When we stayed there this summer, I'd grab dinner to go at Mara, and bring it back for dh and the kids. I swear I walked off the calories before I even reached our room!!

For those of you who don't know Rich, he was an OKW owner from way back. He loved OKW, and would often crack on other DVC resorts. Unfortunately, he passed away much too young, but I smile whenever I read about a long hallway, because it reminds me of his humorous posts.

Diane, I'm glad you got to escape winter for a while. It sounds like you guys have had a great vacation. :)

Diane,
Thanks for your report. It did make me feel a little less crazy about the issues I had with AKV. Same TV problem in both rooms(CL & V), lack of wastebaskets, the rooms being way too dark but the notice on the windows also say to keep the curtains closed because of cameras, bad housekeeping: my CL room wasn't ready until after 4pm and still had dirty towels on the floor of the bathroom and for some bizarre reason there was a giant stack of coasters on the bed, just sloppy work IMO.
Unfortunately I found the hotel to be extremely noisy. In the CL room all I heard all night was noise from the lobby and the dinging of the elevators. I was almost at the end of the hallway too away from the elevator. In the V room I was right by the elevator (giraffe trail) but I never heard it, just the pipes or something clunking all night and for some reason 9:30pm was when they decided to vacuum the hallways, the V room was freezing too even when I cranked the degrees way up. Smelled like it was burning from the vents.
It wasn't worth the effort for me to complain as I was only there 3nights and I felt that I didn't take the time to explore the resort like a wanted to so the bad stuff had more of an opportunity to be prevalent. I'd like to give it a fairer chance with a longer visit before making up my mind on Jambo House at least.

I did see a woman complaining at the front desk about roaches in her room. Said they were all over the counters and in the bathroom. Not 100% sure if I believed her just from listening to the conversation she was having with the manager(she didn't want anything actually done about it) but it is what she was reporting. I got the impression she just wanted her bill reduced in a big way but maybe I was wrong. ;)

WOW! No problems with noise or roaches, but I've decided that the lowering of housekeeping standards is becoming a Disney wide or at least DVC wide problem. We are at OKW now, and while the unit has obviously been recently refurbed, the housekeeper oviously did a "once and done" job, because there was a bottle of Jack Daniels in the cupboard, and a jacket in the front hall closet. A thorough cleaning would have easily revealed both. It caused me to be sure I cleaned the jets on the tub before I took my Jacuzzi. Also, we had one shampoo/conditioner/soap set in an OKW 1 bedroom that usually gets two sets. This means the soap must keep traveling back and forth between the shower and the tub....a real PITA!

Thank you so much for the updates and the picture of the "people pen!" We will be there in a few days and I am rethinking the packing to include lots of warmer clothes! Maybe I should also stop by before the resort and pick up some Clorox wipes. I hope you have a great time at OKW.
