Holy Crap!! Tux Rental

Have you checked with your DN about this? If she said YOURS was to be free, maybe there is some snafu where they allocated the freebie to the wrong person.

I haven't but I will. I think they thought both the groom and the ring bearer would be free. But the girl at the store said only one free rental per wedding party and the groom picked to get his free. She said check with them because maybe they will pay for theirs. I don't want them to have to pay for theirs so I can get mine free, I don't expect that, but 157 is a long way from free.

We got married 26 years ago. The tux rental then was about $100 each. It wasn't anything fancy. Think '86. Standard black tux, white shirt, bow tie, handkerchief and a matching cumberbund.

She sure picked out some spendy tuxedos. If she told you it wouldn't cost you anything when she asked to have your son in the wedding, I would ask her about it. I wouldn't pay that much to have my kid participate in a wedding, especially for just a rental. I think the tuxedos at my wedding cost $100, and the free tux rental we split between our dads so their tuxes wouldn't cost them too much.

I know back when I got married everywhere I looked it was advertised as grooms tux free with 5 rentals or some such wording

I would do the ebay thing. When we got married 6 years ago the rentals where $85 each. I bought all three of my sons off of ebay for under $75 total. They were really nice and included the jacket, shirt, vest, pants and bow ties. It's not like any one is really going to notice. You sure can't tell the difference in any of our pictures between the mens rented tuxes and the kids ebay ones. Some things are just a waste of money and renting a kids tux for that much is one of them. My oldest is going to prom for the first time this year and we will be buying a tux.

$157 seems about average for a tux rental. DH has been in at least 6 or 8 weddings in the almost 9 years that we have known each other, I think the cheapest tux rental for him was about $130 and the most expensive was $250. I remember one wedding that we had to buy certain socks too, the socks were about $10

We didn't have any children in DD's wedding (almost 3 years ago), but that's about right for the tuxedo rentals then. My son-in-law paid for all of the groomsmen.

And that's the right thing to do. We asked our groomsmen to wear dark suits and I bought all the bridesmaids' dresses. I think it's awful that brides and grooms think it's okay to make their best friends pay so much for the privilege of being in their wedding.

We have a formalwear outlet in our town(Hillsborough NC) that sells tuxedos and formal dresses. They are ones that were formerly rented out. They have every style and every size--$89.99 for the whole shebangs except shoes, and you get to keep the tux. I bought DS one last year for prom, so if he goes this year, we won't have to pay. I can pass it down to my nephews as well.

You could have bought several tuxedos by now.

A man should have a tuxedo, a blue suit, a gray suit, and a black suit. That covers just about any semi-formal or formal event.

LOL And if you're a musician, multiple tuxes are the norm (I have 3 that fit!).

DH was in a wedding in September and his rental was about $150 too. I found out later that the bride wouldn't have cared if he had bought his own instead, which I really wish we would have done :headache:

That is the going rate. That is what it cost us for DH and DS 9 at the time, 2 years ago for out eldest DS's wedding. It floored me. I was grateful that DD dress was only $200.

Our other DS might be getting married, but they are leaning towards informal and small so I won't need to get my 12 year old a tux.

When my son was in my niece's wedding, we also went the route of buying him a nice black suit instead of renting a tux. I also made my daughter's outfit. (Click on pic for a bigger view.)

I rented a tux for DS in November and it was $138. He was right on the line between being in a kid's size and a men's, and it seems like the kid's tux would have been a little less expensive. I can't remember exactly what the deal was, but we ended up going with a more expensive one than they originally showed us because there was some issue.

It's ridiculous! We had our groomsman wear black slacks, black button downs and we bought their ties. They looked good to me:). Bridesmaid dresses were bought off of ebay, they were really cute and cost $50 a piece, my parents paid for them all though. The dresses needed quite a bit of altering, luckily we knew a good one who did it for around $30.

I know this is an old thread bumped back up, but we're going to pick out DS's prom tux tomorrow. I'm expecting to spend around $100.

Still cheaper than what I'd have to pay for a dress, hair, nails, etc. :)

My son got married last year and paid $200 to rent, my other son is getting married this year and they bought suits for $275.

Oy, was I ever wrong on how much a tux rental costs! :faint:

I just got back from a visit to Men's Wearhouse with DS16. I was really pleasantly surprised after reading this thread!!! He wanted a basic black tux with white pleated wing collar shirt, black bow tie and black cummerbund. He didn't need to rent studs (my husband owns them for his tux) or shoes (he has them as part of his military school uniform). He needs the tux for Friday and Saturday nights as he has back to back proms.

With my $40 off prom coupon it was only $82.90. This included all taxes and fees (including the $20 rush fee because we waited until the week before prom to order it - live & learn).

My son was just in a wedding
All the 13 or so groomsmen and BridesMen( yes bride had guys on her side -lol)
Were asked to wear a black suit...then all ordered the same gray tie....much cheaper!!

My nephew is getting married next June and has already decided that they are all going to go when they have their Buy one get free suit sale and the guys will all buy suits and split the cost....They are all young and working somewhere where another suit will go to good use so they figure at least if they end up spending $200 (or even a little more) at least they have something to show for it.
