I admit that I am usually out of the loop, but this just floors me.

Last night, DD, her friend, and I met up with some friends from out of town to see the new Pirates movie. My visiting friends wanted to see the movie in 3D. I went to buy the tickets for the three of us and was totally surprised when the guy told me that it is $5 extra per person to see a movie in 3D. The tickets were $10 each to begin with. No way am I paying $15 per ticket to see any movie!

We ended up seeing the regular show and my out of town friends went to the 3D.

I have never been to a 3D movie, but I just can't imagine it is worth paying that much extra. That is just my opinion, but I doubt I will ever see a 3D film at that price. :confused3

I wouldn't pay to see Pirates in 3D but I think some movies are totally worth it. Avatar for one, comes to mind.

The first 3D movie I took the kids to see was the Jonas Bothers 3D concert. It cost $15 for each of us. We ended up having the whole theater to just the 3 of us. Much cheaper than an actual concert! LOL!

We paid once and it wasn't worth it, now we just go to the regular 2D movies.

It depends on the movie. The 3D for P4 wasn't needed, in my opinion. You were right to pick the 2D movie for the lower price.

But, there are other movies that 3D really enhances the movie. I would not want to see Avatar in anything other than 3D.

And I think movie prices are subjective. I pay $12 for a movie here, and I am happy to pay that price because the theatre I attend has limited previews and commercials, assigned seating, and people are not allowed to walk into the theatre for the first time once the movie has started. They also monitor for cell phone and texting uses to help movie-goers enjoy the movie. When they have a 3D movie, it is a few bucks more and I decide ahead of time if it is worth it by either asking around or reading reviews of 3D vs. 2D.

I don't think 3D is going away, but I think the audience will start to send a clear message to moviemakers that sometimes you need 3D and sometimes you don't. It is a tool for the industry to use, much like sound, special effects, and practical stunts, ti name a few.

There isn't any reason to have $35m in special effects for a walk and talk movie, and there is no way you can make a Fast Five using CGI effects alone. (That film made really great usage of practical stunts.)

I loved Pirates#4, but wish we hadn't bothered paying the extra for 3D. My husband thought it gave some depth to some scenes, but frankly I don't think it did.

I actually avoid 3-D in movies as it gives me a headache after a while. It's one of those things that's great in small doses only. Plus movies are so expensive anyway, I see no need to pay more.

I'm kinda like this too.

And 3-D isn't a big deal when I see it but then I heard and read that everyone doesn't get the full effect of 3-D.

Movies are just so darned expensive. We rarely go but our theatre is jank. They are actually building a new one and it'll be more expensive but maybe more pleasant also.

I rarely enjoy 3D. It was fun when it first came out but not worth the money imho. thankfully, my son agrees.

We saw Pirates in 3D and actually loved it! In so many of the scenes it gave you the feeling of being IN the movie. Harry Potter is going to be in 3D and we will definitly be paying the extra to see it.

Its $3 more per person here, so $12 for 3D.

Yikes, how do young folks date anymore?

I'm almost glad I'm old. :lmao:

Something I have noticed at our theater:

Movies like Pirates is showing on 3 screens. Of those 3, 2 are showing it in 3D. And the 3D show times are the more popular/convienent times. I am expecting it to get harder and harder to not choose 3D.

Movies have become so costly we only afford for special occasions now. :guilty:
We took some of our little grands to see Rio recently...$15 for 3D, plus another $10 for a small bag of popcorn and drink pp. :scared:

I have seen 2-3 movies in 3D (Christmas Carol; Toy Story 3; maybe something else) and believed it was a huge ripoff each time. I certainly understand why the studios like to upsell consumers, but I actively avoid 3D shows now. Pirates 4 looked like all the 3D would add would be some sword-wiggling.

IMO, the only movie that I was willing to spend or thought was worth the extra $$'s for 3D was Avatar.

The following is taken from the above link. And it is exactly how I feel about 3D.
“I think people are tired of showing up and having to wear glasses — at high prices — every single week,” says Greenfield, who happened to mention the three most frequent complaints launched against 3-D: uncomfortable glasses, expensive surcharges, and an oversaturated market.

Last summer a theater by my house offered $8 3D tickets for the first showing of the day of a movie- usually around 10-11am. It was really nice because the theater was almost always empty because the only people that would be going to movies at that time seemed to be parents with kids or parents with a group of kids, and they didn't want to pay for 3D for 4+ people. I think regular tickets were $5 for the early showing, while 3D was $8. I haven't been to that movie theater since last summer, so I hope the prices are still the same this summer.

Other than that, I don't like to pay extra for 3D (mostly because I don't really like watching movies in 3D).

Blech on 3-D .. I'll avoid a theater if only showing 3-D version. Experts have commented that the mind does not process the faked depth well which causes many to be sick or have headache. Just had a friend of DDl throw up in our car after seeing Pirates 3-D last weekend ... nice.

I hate 3d. I already wear glasses and putting those black ones over the top of my glasses is awful. The extra weight on my nose/ears gives me a headache. The stupid effects make me motion sick. Having most movies in 3d only makes me go to the theater LESS and spend LESS money. I refuse to see (or pay for) a 3d movie in almost all cases.
