We've gone several times with my son who is now 4 and he always had a blast. I think I liked lunch a little better than breakfast food-wise, but both were fine. The characters come to the tables and also bring the kids up front to dance to the Playhouse Disney songs. I recommend it.
I honestly think H&V is one of the worst buffets on Disney's property. We ate dinner there in Feb 2007...there was nothing good to say about it. The food was bland- nothing stood out. I couldn't even tell you one thing we ate. I remember DH and I walking out of there and DH saying, "Well, that was a waste of dining credits". DS7 & DD3 did not enjoy it either.
There are other character restaurants that are more enjoyable for the younger set- Chef Mickey's, 1900 Park Faire, Crystal Palace- that H&V should be last on the list.
We went last August and we liked it. My kids loved the characters and how they could go dance around. I thought the food was good and it was a fun atmosphere.
We were there this past August for lunch and had a blast.
I actually thought the food was on the better side as far as the character buffets go. Lots of choices for the adults and different choices (but still plenty) for the kids and of course, you could take from either no matter what your age. I enjoyed everything I chose.
The character interaction was also on the better side. They all stop by the tables one by one as any other character meal. But the upside is the dancing and singing that they do at certain times, maybe every 15-20 minutes (maybe more). To see the look on my DS's face to be able to get up and perform with Jo-Jo and the rest was priceless.
If your little one(s) is a big fan of Little Einsteins and Jojo's Circus it's definitely worth it! When we were there last year with our 4 and almost-3 year olds it was the highlight of their day at the Studios. My older daughter still has a picture of June hugging her hanging on her closet door.
The food is standard buffet food - nothing memorable.
We only did the lunch. We usually eat a quick breakfast in our room so we can start our day earlier. I think a character lunch makes for a great break from touring, especially if it's hot out.
If you kid(s) don't love Leo, June, Jojo and Goliath then maybe a different meal would be better... But if they love them, they'll have a great time!

We did the lunch as JoJo was our one of our son's favorite when he was about 1-2. He had fun, the food was okay, nothing compared to Crystal Palace. Since getting back he has not been that interested in JoJo or Little Einsteins so we may skip this one on our next trip - based only on that. If your kids like either show, it is a must.
I remember pancakes, mickey waffles, egg frittata (vegtable?), mexican style egg scramble (pepper/onion/sausage(spanish style) etc) with tortillas if you wanted to make a burrito & toppings, fresh breads to toast (including cinnamon raison), yogurt and fresh fruit, bacon, sausage patties, buscuits.......
Nothing was 'fancy', but a good breakfast we were happy with. Also breakfast danish/muffins & I think a cobbler type dessert. I've been to Crystal Palace & Ohana brekfasts in the past and I will say that those were probably better, but not sure if fair to compare due to the passage of time.
The only non-breakfast buffet I've done is Chef Mickeys and I prefer breakfast type foods for buffet.
We actually LOVE this character meal! So much so, we went twice last trip. We snagged the first seating for lunch one time, and the last breakfast seating the other. The best part about doing that was because they were changing over the food, they had one half the buffet with breakfast food, one side had lunch. Soooo, whether my kids wanted Mickey waffles or chicken tenders, it was all good

You're right - I forgot about that. We had the last breakfast seating but our server told us to help ourselves to either side. My son actually had mickey waffles and chicken nuggets on the same plate. Gross, I know, but anything goes on vacation!
We thought it was terrific. Then again, I have two little ones who love the Playhouse Disney characters. THey loved the singing and dancing (my dad who was with us, probably could have done without that as he was looking for the advil!). The food was okay, but I wasn't there for the food. We are going back this time for lunch (we did bdast last time)
