Hollywood Studios, December 2016

Depends. Is there anything there that you want to see or do?

There will still be stuff going on, and the "big" rides will all still be there; TOT, Toy Story, Star Tours. Despite what people are saying and thinking, it's not an empty wasteland of past attractions. But it really depends on what stuff you're interested in there right now...that would dictate whether it's worth going.

I know in our case there'll be/could be stuff closing which we like (like the shows, etc) and we skip ToT and RnRC so I don't think we'll be back for a while

Sure, if you like the stage shows and remaining attractions. However, Christmas decorations will likely not be the same.

No idea .. I would think by then it should be fine .. but eventually they will have to do more closings, right?

I wonder when they will do more closing (because eventually they will have to):
1) Indiana Jones (most suspect that will get eaten up by Star Wars Land
2) Launch Bay (eventually that building will become part of Toy Story Land
3) Little Mermaid/Disney Junior (It is suspected that would be the entrace to Toy Story Land)
4) You'd think that Star Tours and TSMM would need to close for a while as well as they reconstruct the areas AROUND those rides.

It will be interesting to see how they plan major construction in two parts of the park AT THE SAME TIME and leave open enough attractions to warrant it being worth going there.

Did they announce that they will be doing major reconstructing of two parts of the park at the same time?

I don't know technically .. but since they announced them together and the closings have shut down the entire back half of the park, I assume so. Otherwise one of the lands wouldn't be done for a decade!

It feels like this is Disney's "answer" to the success of the Harry Potter worlds and I don't think they will take their time getting them done after announcing them already.

And, looking at the opening dates and announcements made...
New Fantasyland was an "answer to" Harry Potter at Universal.
And, we saw how fast NFL was completed.
(That is to say... S L O W L Y.)

Here's hoping the things at DHS progress faster than New Fantasyland.

I think it's way too early to tell what will and will not be open in December. Most people assumed LMA and Streets of America were on the chopping block, but they only actually gave us 3 months notice that they would officially be closing. So there are rumors surrounding almost every other area of the park (excluding Sunset Blvd) but Disney might not announce actual closings until just a few months out.
