hi there, fellow travelers! looking for any and all feedback from anyone who has used their points for this cruise...we are thinking about going in 2008 and I want to see how it went for anyone else.

I've cruised in Alaska twice before - once with Princess and once with Royal Caribbean ...both were excellent experiences.....just have never sailed with Holland America...

was it worth the points or am I just better off booking with cash?

thanks!

I'd like to know that as well. I keep thinking a cash reservation might be better in this case, but I'd like opinions as well.

The only cruise we have been on is Holland America to Alaska (1 week inside passage) before we had kids 13 years ago. I know things have changed, but it was very elegant and wonderful. Seemed less glitzy than photos I've seen of other cruise lines. Don't know if this helps, but we loved it. Also we ended up in Vancouver BC and that was a great city to visit!

We've always paid $ for our HAL cruises (5 to Alaska). If you have points to burn and don't want the bother of renting them out, use them. But you'll most likely come out ahead renting the points and paying cash for the cruise. One cruise we got a GREAT price and paid about $1600pp for a 'S' suite and last time was about $1200pp for a plain old outside cabin. Both times we had verandahs (S & A/B categories) in Alaska we barely used them - too much scenery ALL around, we didn't like being limited to seeing only what was on one side of the ship. Some polple swear by them, but they are a waste of money for us in Alaska, maybe in the Caribbean....

Try checking out the HAL forum on the Cruise Critic. Here is a recent thread on using DVC points.
