Holiday decorations? Weather?

Do you suppose any of the holiday decorations will still be up for Marathon Weekend 2008? :santa:

In reading reports from prior events, I understand that last year it was warm and humid for the 1/2 marathon and the year before it was cold. Coming from Oregon, I'd probably do better in the latter. I'm wondering if there are any suggestions to prepare myself for the possibility of high humidity, short of moving the treadmill in the bathroom and cranking up the shower? :cool2:

Hi klh!

Last year the holiday decorations were up but slowly came down while we were there (We stayed for a week after the marathon.) This year marathon weekend is a bit later, so they may all be gone by the time of the race.

As far as the weather goes, I ran the half last year and was actually very comfortable. I know it was worse for the marathon; also worse because you're out there a lot longer! I don't know how you can acclimate yourself to weather that you don't experience in your area unless you head to FL a few days ahead of time. I wish I could send you some of our heat and humidity!

Good luck!

I am from the mountains of Lake Tahoe where there is zero humidity. As mentioned the humidity and heat weren't bad for the 1/2. We did a 3:21 to save energy for the marathon the next day. You should be fine and I wouldn't worry about it to much.

If it was the marathon, its a different story. My DW got hurt at mile 13 and we made it by 52 seconds. The late morning/early afternoon on the roads was ugly.

Stay hydrated and make sure you keep your electrolytes up.

I would guess the decorations would come down the first weekend in January. That would mean most would be gone by Marathon time. However they might delay it a little this year due to the Marathon but I wouldn't count on it.

I'd agree with Bill about the decorations. I usually can gauge how long the holiday stuff will be around based on the holiday event schedule. The last day of the Jingle Jungle Parade (according to the WDW web site) is Sunday, Jan 6th. The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights also ends that day. My guess is that the following day is when the decorations will begin coming down in earnest -- and it is amazing how quickly they can vanish without a trace! Overnight almost!

Some years the races are so close to Christmas that we get to experience a lot of the holiday stuff. I don't think we'll see as much this year. (But we can always hope!)

Well that sucks!! That's part of the fun!! "O" well!!

As far as weather, even those of us who live in Florida weren't ready for the kind of heat we got. It had actually been cold here before that. All of my long runs started in temps around 50. That sudden shift in temps was a killer for all of us.
