Holiday decorations at resorts

After listening to the podcast where resort decorations were discussed, I felt a need to chime in. We were at Disney last December at this time and I'm thinking that the decline actually started at the resorts last year. The Yacht Club had the "village" display, that I would characterize as an elaborate Dept. 56 village. That and the tree decorated with sailboats was it. Now I wonder what was there the years before!

The Boardwalk and Beach Club were very nice with the carousel and gingerbread decorations. It was apparently the same as this year.

The Contemporary had a gingerbread tree and stand to buy gingerbread at the Mary Blair wall. That was up on the concourse level. There were, of course trees decorating the lobby.

I have to agree, that if you've never seen it, you wouldn't know what you are missing, but boy, now I know and I would be disappointed if it were further reduced when I go back.

As a non-frequent Disney visitor who is thinking about buying a DVC re-sale in the next year or so, I am much more interested in the "big picture" (Australia at AK, the rumored fifth park, Art of Animation resort, etc.) than I am in resort decorations for a few weeks at Christmas.

But then again, I am someone who visits DAK almost exclusively to ride Everest over and over. :santa:

Just to give folks an idea, here are five photos I took December 20, 2009, of the Yacht and Beach Club Railroad setup.

I can't tell much if any difference from the photos Kathy took this year.

I was wondering about the comments on the podcast about the Yacht Club display. What do you guys remember being different about the display in the Yacht Club? We have only been to WDW for 2 Christmas', 2005 and 2007. This year's display doesn't sound any different to me. My pictures from 2005 look the same as jcb's pictures from last year.

I thought the worst was what we saw at the Poly in 2007. I think there was a sign that these were made by local schools. Didn't understand why the chefs at the Poly couldn't make something.

The display in 1996 was different, because I was there when they were in the process of making it as a ski chalet scene. I called it "Marzipan Mountain" because the entire lobby smelled like it. The base was all edible,
as were the decorations. Were any of the buildings made from edible materials? They were in 1996.

In 2009 it did not look like anything on that display was edible. I wonder how long ago there was more to it?

Those houses from 2009 are mostly D56 as the other poster stated. I have them here at my house as well.

Our first Christmas in WDW and at the B/Y Club was in 2006 and they had them on display then as well.

I have photos of the same display at the Yacht club in 2007. I don't recall seeing anything different in recent history, but maybe many years ago?

The Department 56 viallage IS what they have been doing there for years. I went first and saw it in 1998. I was so inspired by their elaborate display that I made it my goal to spruce up my own village at home.

I have to say, I don't think this village display is anything short of a work of art. As someone who collects Dept 56, I know how much time and effort goes into putting up the most simple village. This one has hand made signs, fences, and other really creative touches. This is NOT a display that anyone with a dining room table could replicate. Look at the levels, and the mountains. This is a carefully planned village that has been a tradition at the yacht club for years. Obviously it doesn't appeal to all, because it didn't seem to impress Kathy, but I don't feel like Disney mailed it in on this one.

Also, the Contemporary has a 17 ft Christmas tree made out of gingerbread there this year, I don't think Kathy mentioned that. So, there was SOME effort made there too.

^ Here's a pic of the ALL CHOCOLATE sculpture I took at the CR in Christmas of '08.

Guess it's not coming back....
