Amidst the cluster of my son graduating and everything I didn't cancel our reservation in time for this month. I now have a large amount of points in Holding to deal with. We thought about taking a trip just the two of us this fall but my wife just asked if we could put it on a cruise being "Holding Points" just wanted to throw that out and ask. Thanks for any info. Painful lesson learned...o_O

I'm not sure of the answer to your question.

If you have never ever asked DVC for a favor before, you might call them tomorrow to ask the question, and perhaps they will be able to help. I imagine there's a .5% chance of help being forthcoming, but it's 0% if you don't chat with them.

That said, have you looked up how much it costs in points for a cruise? Yikes.

I agree - you'll have to call MS. Holding points are restricted - they expire at the end of the use year and they can only be used to make a reservation that begins between 0 and 60 days in the future. You may also run into the "4 month" rule. You must make the reservation for something in one of the collections (like a stay at a non-DVC WDW Disney resort or a cruise) more than 4 months prior to the end of your use year if you will also begin your stay/cruise during that 4 month period.

However, I'm not sure if the restrictions would apply to a cruise, so you'll have to call. (I suspect the restrictions will apply because MS has to have time to get the cash to pay for the cruise from CRO/DRC (by renting the equivalent number of DVC room nights & returning a portion of the proceeds to DVC) . Members who cruise or use points for non-DVC WDW resorts supply the bulk of the DVC rooms available to the general public for cash).

Good luck!

Holding Account Guidelines
Find out what a Holding Account is and learn how it works.

A Holding Account is a "parking space" for Vacation Points from a Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation that has been modified or cancelled 30 days to 1 day before your check-in date.

The Vacation Points in your Holding Account can be used for a new reservation booked 60 days or fewer before check-in within the following time constraints:

Use Vacation Points Anytime During Your Use Year for:
  • Disney Vacation Club Resorts
  • Disneyland Resort in California
  • Tokyo Disney Resort
  • World Collection
Use Vacation Points More Than 4 Months Before the End of Your Use Year for:
  • Disney Collection (except Disneyland Resort in California and Tokyo Disney Resort)
  • Concierge Collection
These Vacation Points cannot be banked or borrowed and must be used by the end of the Use Year or they expire.

Gonna give it a try, waiting until the two month window of our travel time. We have to use them by Nov 30 and plan on going this fall. Can't book until 2 months prior with Holding points

The Rule of Four applies to Cruise bookings.

Most Disney Collection reservations (excluding reservations at Disneyland Resort in California, and Tokyo Disney Resort) must be made prior to the last 4 months of your Use Year for stays during that Use Year.
