Many of the properties around DL are old, and refurbishing can only do so much. They still get so much business and can keep their rates up because of the proximity. I would think you could get a much nicer room for the price by going a couple of miles away.
I think one of the reasons that people get disappointed (this was true for me) is that the HoJo is rated number two on Tripadvisor of Disneyland area hotels. Grand Californian is number one. This property rates above the Hilton, The Disneyland Hotel and Paradise Pier. I think people need to realize that tripadvisor reviews are based on not only rooms and location but value for the money . A lot of people that frequent sites like tripadvisor are looking for a lot of bang for the buck and since that need is met by the HoJo, they are happy. You pay a low rate all things considered, its fairly clean and a 10 minute walk to Disneyland so it is then considered "a gem of a hotel". With the onsite DLR hotels going for such high rates, people have really high expections and want a lot of bells and whistles and no screw ups! If you are staying at the HoJo for $69 a night you won't be put out if you have some minor problems but if you are staying at the DLH and paying $225 a night and you don't get enough towels, well that is a different story! I think it also is the nicest of the strip of motels there on Harbor between the crossing up to the highway. It has something those properties don't have, nice grounds and more than one pool area. But in my opinion it is not higher in quality than say the DLH but it is a better value I guess. Every since staying there I don't hold tripadvisor as the end all be all of hotel ratings. I agree with putting more stock in AAA diamonds which take a lot of factors in by people who are in the hospitality industry.
