HoJo Kids Suite vs On Site Standard Room

I am currently debating where to stay for our family trip in June.

This is our first trip to DLR, but we are WDW veterans looking to beat the Florida June heat and mix it up with a trip to Cali. We will have two kids 4yo princess and 9mo pirate.

I have a kids suite booked at HoJo for 6 nights that will cost around $1300 total. On site I can get Paradise Pier or Dinseyland Hotel for a few hundred dollars more, but it will be a standard room, with a lot less room.

So the questions are:

Is it worth the extra money to be immersed in Disney like we are at WDW?

With the baby, a mid-day break at the hotel is important to us. Which hotels are closest to the parks for a quick walk back? Are the on-site properties closer than HoJo?

Thanks for all the help?

I will probably be in the minority here but with 2 little ones, I find staying onsite is so much easier. And for a first DLR trip, it is so magical to pull up to either hotel, especially the DLH, with all the Disney touches. Both DLR hotels are probably about the same walking distance as the Hojo with the only difference being you can take the monorail to cut down on walking either way when you are staying onsite.

I have seen photos of the kid's suite at Hojo's and the room is far bigger than what you will get onsite. Most people on the boards rave about the Hojo's so I don't think you can go wrong there. I think if you were debating a standard room at each hotel, onsite would win but with the kid's suite - tough call - which is more important to you, more space or being more immersed in Disney?

The actually closest hotels within walking distance are across the street on Harbor. Carousel Inn has a kid's suite that is decorated in Disney stuff.

I would normally recommend considering the DLH as well because of the magic and monorail, but won't the pool areas still be pretty torn up this summer?

The main thing that would attract me to the PPH over HoJo is the extra MM offerings since you get to go into MM each day it is offered as a resort guest.

Our family has done both a standard room at Paradise Pier (Dec. 2006) and a kid's suite at Hojos (Nov. 2010).

When we stayed at the Paradise Pier, it was our first time staying at a Disney hotel. (We have only tried a Disney hotel one other time, DLH in June 2010.) Our room was spacious. There were two queen beds and a daybed. There was a small refrigerator, a hairdryer, no microwave, I can't remember about a coffeemaker. The room was very clean. The decor was bright and pleasant with a few Disney touches, but it wasn't that Disney-ish. Since we stayed in December and the weather was chilly and the kids had colds, we didn't try the pool with the cool slide. I hear it's a really neat water slide. We had no view so couldn't see fireworks or anything from our room but could listen to Disney music on the t.v. We ate at the PCH Grill since it was there. The food is decent, and since it's off the beaten track it's not usually crowded. These are in fact the reasons we have eaten there since, even when not staying at the hotel. The walk from the Paradise Pier Hotel was no problem for us. We usually took the GCH shortcut, often referred to on these boards. I wouldn't say that the walk is any shorter than Hojos, but it is, I guess, more pleasant in that you never have to see/experience Harbor Blvd, a city street. If your first entrance of the day is into DCA, you have the advantage of using the GCH entrance into that park. You also have the benefit of using MM each day it's available.

The Hojo kid's suite is made up of two of the hotel's smaller rooms that have been joined together. The grown-up side has a king bed. The kid side has a full-size bunk bed and a pull-out couch. Each side has it's own bathroom. We loved this part! There is a door between the two sides that closes and locks. Each side has it's own tv. There was ample storage for clothes and luggage. The room was immaculately clean. The decor was fun, pirate themed. Some have complained because the door to the outside hallway is on the kid side of the suite. We weren't concerned because we lock all the locks and use the security bar, and our kids are mature enough and responsible enough not to open the door or go out without permission. Another possible drawback to the suite is that it is on the highway side of the building. The highway noise is a constant, but many regard it as just white noise. I am a pretty light sleeper and still managed. Another problem I noted in our particular room was spotty wireless Internet. Parking is ample at Hojos and free. I will note that parking at Paradise Pier was also quite easy and close but not free. My boys really enjoy the water play area at Hojos and also like the swimming pool.

If it was me, I would probably go with the Hojos kid's suite, and here's why: space and privacy. Your kids are pretty young and may be needing mid-day naps and earlier bedtimes. When our boys were that young and we were all sharing one room, DH and I would have to turn off all the lights at night and lie still on the bed waiting for the boys to fall asleep. Even after they did so, we had to tiptoe around, whisper, and use limited lighting. It's nice to be able to have the kids in a separate room so DH and I can stay awake and comfortably do our own thing. With older kids, it's nice for everyone to have their own space and get a break from each other. You're staying a lot of nights. For a two to three night stay, I might try a DL hotel again for the fun experience, but for a longer stay, that extra space and break from each other is really important. Two bathrooms too! That is so nice for expediting the getting ready in the morning. Just my two cents. You'll have fun either way.

What about splitting your stay? Start off at the HoJo's and then switch to either DLH or PPH for the last 2-3 nights. I know it is a pain to move but if you time it right, you can do the MM with your PH and then be onsite for the other MM perks. If you do split, do HoJo first and then the DLR hotel.

And the DLH is undergoing a lot of construction around the pool site. I have heard the pool will be open but not the slide - however, only your 4 yr old could do the big slide as long as she can swim by herself. You can not be there to catch her.

This is a tough call. I agree with DangerMouse. Since it's summer, you might want to take advantage of the fact that if you stay at Disney hotel, you get all the magic mornings (early admission to Disneyland). Plus it would be nice to hang at the Disney pools. Normally I would say DLH, no brainer, but their pool is under construction. PPH or Grand Californian. If this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip and $ isn't an object, I would strongly urge you to GCH. Their rooms are small, yes, but you can spend some glorious summer time by their fabulous pool. It is the closest Disney hotel to the parks also - it has an exit/entrance directly into DCA.

To clarify, the Neverland pool and kiddie waterslide is open at DLH. You also can use the pool at GCH if you stay at the DLH. So the state of the pool would not be a concern for me. The Neverland pool is really great for a 4yo.

IMO, I would stay onsite. I LOVE having a room to get away from the kids, but the convience of walking through DTD or taking the monorail and not crossing a major road with small children, the extra MM, and other perks like being able to send purchases back to your hotel are really worth it. Plus the princess bedtime stories on TV will be fantastic for your 4yo.

I've never stayed at the HoJo, so I can't say for certain how far of a walk it would be, but I can say that the DLH is extremely close and would be very easy to stop off at mid day for naps and pool time. If it's not a huge imposition, I would spend the couple hundred more and stay at the DLH. It's a great experience to be immersed in the magic the whole time and it's extremely convenient.

If it helps, here is a thread where the poster figured out the estimated walking time from some nearby hotels including onsite:

As you can see, the GCH is by far the closest. They do have rooms with a queen and bunk bed. It wasn't on your list so the additional cost may be too much but having traveling with my son to DL since he was 2 1/2, I found convenience trumps all - plus the extra MM for longer stays.

For what its worth, the recommendation on bunk beds is 6+. You may want to consider if it is worth it based on your 4 yr old. While I understand that she can sleep on the bottom or on the pull out, there is a possibility for climbing up and jumping off or playing up there. I know our 4 yr old would be all over it and would be a serious risk... but he is a boy and kids differ. It's just something additional to consider.

Lots to consider here. Thanks for all the great advice. As a Disney fanatic, I am really leaning toward staying on site. I work hard all year long so I can go on our Disney trips. What's an extra $500?

So GCH? hmmm. Let's hope for some nice discounts coming up...maybe 5 for3? Is that likely?

There were some good deals last summer. If you're going the onsite route and don't mind a splurge, my advice would be to consider either the DLH or GCH rather than Paradise Pier. I don't feel the Pier really has enough going for it to outweigh the benefits of a walking distance, non-Disney hotel.
