I am not sure totally what you are asking but...I wrap a clean fireplace brick with foil and use it to weigh down a sandwich in a skillet. A kind of homemade panini press.

Thanks We don't have any fireplace bricks either. Not much need for them here. I guess we'll just have cold buns, until I get a sandwich presser. That would probably be easier to find around here than the brick. It's a great idea though.
Just so we're all on the same page, I'm talking about pressing a bun like you would have with a pressed cuban sandwich. It makes the bread crunchy & warm on the outside, but it's still soft on the inside. I hope that makes more sense than my OP. I'm not sure I understand what I'm trying to say. Anyway, is this what you guys are thinking of also? Thanks again
tarheelmjfan, if you could put the sandwich in a skillet--place a flat cooky sheet on top--then weigh it down with a couple heavy cans. That may do the trick.
