Historic area Orlando or Kissimmee

DH and I are going to the World on Jan 4-10, 2009 and are staying at the Pop. DH wants to go down on the 2nd and do some non-Theme Park things, like museums or antiques.

Is there a historic area in Orlando or Kissimmee? Kissimmee is coming up in a google search, but not a lot of info out there.

We are riding Amtrak down, so we could get off in either place, and stay in a hotel in either area. No car this trip - all has to be in walking distance or a bus ride.

I'm figuring there is neat stuff to do, but like my home town, nobody but the locals know. Thanks!

If you're taking the train, I'd VERY highly recommend stopping in Winter Park. There are a couple of nice hotels that you can see from the train station. Park Avenue is full of cool shops and restaurants and the Morse Museum is just fantastic.

We just came back and I'd recommend Downtown Kissimmee as a nice place to spend a few hours. The park by the lake is nice and the main street has some quaint shops and restaurants. We ate in a new restaurant called Three Sisters and found it be very nice. It seems to me that the whole area is being redone and brought upto modern standards yet still keeping the charm of yesteryear.

As for Orlando, I agree with John...Winter Park is one of our favorite places to go. We also enjoyed Altamonte.

When we bought our house, we went to a place near Orlando shopping for antiques. At the time, there was many to wander through. It's been 11 yrs, so I don't know if it's changed. I can't even remember the name of the area. It may have been Mount Dora, but I'm not sure. Hopefully someone else has been & can provide more info.
