Hip Lanyard or Neck Lanyard

I was just thinking about buying a hip lanyard. My first thought was that if I didn't want my lanyard around my neck, I could attach it to a belt loop. And then I remembered the time my chain wallet got stuck in the crack of a subway seat and trapped me on the train until I freed myself. LOL

Those retractable Disney brand hip lanyards - Do you find them pretty tough? They look a little flimsy to me. Experience? Opinions?
