My parents are interested in trying something other than WDW for a change. They are thinking of trying out Hilton Head but are a little concerned.

They are getting up in years and not driving as much as they used to. Their plan would be to fly into the Hilton head area (either into Savannah or directly to HH) and get transportation to the HH DVC. Their concern is what would they do with their time were they to stay there for 4-5 days if they do not have wheels, do not play golf, and do not lay out on a beach.

What is there for them to do and how would they get around? All help appreciated....

Although there is transportation provided to the Disney Beach house (about 1 mile away), I'm not sure I would want to do HHI without a car.

There is some shopping in the area directly across the bridge from the resort and a couple of nice restaurants. There are not, however, ANY full service restaurants at the resort itself. This is not normally a bad thing, but unless they are planning to cook all their own food, this can be very limiting. There are definitely a bunch of activities at the resort itself, including the dolphin cruises whihc leave from the Marina next to the resort, but most restaurants and shopping would be out of their reach.

That said, I do not know if their are any reliable and reasonably priced taxi services on the Island. I will hope someone else can speak to that.

The above all said, it is a beautiful resort and the pools at the resort and the beach house are great. It's worth doing if it can be done :)

Good Luck!

These are within an easy walk of the resort - especially if they stay in the Lodge.

There are lots of water related activities available (kayaking, canoeing, Dolphin Cruises, fishing, crabbing) and many activities right at the resort for adults- Cooking With Matilda, Wine Tasting, nature walks, shelling.

There are also museums, theatersm shopping, bike riding and many other options. the resort recreation staff can make lots of suggestions.

There are several nice restaurants within 400 yards of the resort- an easy walk. Taxis are available for exporing other areas of the island.

Enjoy!

I just returned from Disney's Hilton Head and Palmetto Dunes just started a Dunes Buggy transportation. Disney was listed in the article as some of the supporters. I did not use it, but it stops at Shelter Cove, the Mall, Piggly Wiggly, and some other stops in Palmetto Dunes including that beach house. It is also available on demand. One owner said that he called and they picked him up in 10 minutes to breakfast at one of the restaurants within that area. This service is available to owners and rentors at Palmetto Dunes or Shelter Cove that includes Disney.

The article said that Palmetto Dunes was voted in Travel and Leisure as the top family destination and that the resort decided that it lacked the internal transportation that other resorts had. They also hoped that it would cut down on the traffic congestion in Palmetto Dunes. Vacationers would also have the flexibility for one to play golf while the rest of the family played on the beach.

Hope this helps.
