I have not tried Hilton Head before and need some advise. From NYS what is the best airport to fly into? Also is it to cold an Thanksgiving to play golf. Will the golf courses be open? I know theres some interesting tours to do there, could I have some suggestion for November. Thanks in advance

Savannah airport in Georgia is the nearest large airport to HH. It is a 45 minute drive to HH from there. There is a small airport on HH, but hardly any direct flights from large airports into HH.

My DW and sister-in-law did the Savannah tour and loved it.We were there in summer of 2001,and it was very hot, so make sure you get an air conditioned tour bus, if you do the Savannah tour.
Have never been to HH in winter months ,but I am sure someone else(Doc ) will answer your questions about golfing and weather conditions.

I have "Golfer's Guide to Hilton Head Island" in front of me, and it lists rates at a huge variety of courses, but none past 11/9. So I hope someone else can answer you-DH wouldn't go unless he could golf then. And I would expect the weather is OK for golfing at Thanksgiving time. And golf is such a big attraction at HHI, some golf courses should always be open. However, I hope someone here can answer from experience, not just my speculation.

There are a host of great courses in the area, if you don't mind travelling off the island you'll get the best value. If you want to play the top course on the island it's Harbour town, which is home to one of the big pro tournements ( used to be the MCI classic, but I think it's changed sponsers). This is an expensive course, but the high cost allows them to limit the number of tee times they release, keeping the course in wonderful condition. The 18th is probably one of the most visually stunning (and rascally) holes in the world of golf. When I was there Seapines which is the area that Harbour town is on was offering a deal for one round at each of their three courses ( HT included) , basically it meant you were getting one of the other courses for free. As I was determined to play HT anyway it seemed a decent deal.

Fly to Savannah Airport (airport code is SAV). I absolutely fell in love with that airport last year (when DW, DS3 and DS1 and I stayed at HH). You will have an ample choice of rental car companies from which to choose. As far as golfing, I am of no use to you. Have fun!

We've been to HH at Thanksgiving several times. One year it was warm enough to sit on the beach (although the water was too cold to go in); this past year, I never even went out without a jacket! But, it was bright and sunny, so I guess you could play golf with a jacket on.

We were at HH in November, 2001. Savannah is a lovely airport. We flew Delta Connection from LaGuardia. Easy acces to the rental cars and luggage. A lovely ride to HH about 45 minutes or so. They did ask us to open the car trunk when we returned to the airport to leave.
It was warm in the daytime-light jacket/windbreaker in the AM, shirtsleeves midday but cool at night. Die hard golfers will play almost anytime. We met a former co-worker who lives there year round and works as a golf course 'ranger' keeping the golfers moving along and she said that many of the courses are open year round. It would probably be like playing in the early spring or late fall here in NY.

Like many others I flew into Savannah. Very nice small size airport. I did check into the Hilton Head airport - US Airways used to have some flights from Charlotte if you don't mind connecting there from your home area. The plane from Charlotte to Hilton Head was a smaller plane however not a full size jet.

We generally fly into Savannah from the Boston/Providence area. However, this summer we are flying into Jacksonville FL. It is a little more than a 2 hour drive. But we are saving over $700 by doing this. Airfare was $129 more per person and the car rental was $200 more by going to Savannah. My suggestion is try all your options. Sometimes driving a little futher nets you a HUGE savings!
