Can anyone tell me whether or not the beach is walking distance from the DVC Resort in HH. I WANT TO HEAR ALL THE GOOD AND THE BAD ABOUT THIS PLACE!

It is within walking distance, but a better plan would be to bike or to take the shuttle if you don't have a car.

Yes, you can walk to the beach from the resort. It is just over a mile and there is a walk/bike path. There is also a shuttle from the resort from late-morning to late afternoon and a free "Dunes Buggy" shuttle available from 8:00am thru 8:00pm to cover the times when the resort shuttle doesn't run. The Dunes Buggy also provides transportation to all areas with Palmetto Dunes including a few restaurants, the mall and the grocery store in addition to all resorts and the beach.

The resort is on it's own private wooded island in Broad Creek - a tidal marsh with lots of wildlife visible including Dolphin, Sea Otter, Manatee and a wide variety of shore birds as well as Osprey. There are many activities for all ages available year-round thru the resort recreation deptartment.

There are 6 restaurants within a 10 minute walk as well as number of boutique shops at Shelter Cove - the marina accessible from the resort. HH itself is a wonderful family destination and there is a lot to do - including relaxing. During the summer months a couple of the restaurants across from the resort have free entertainment and Mon-Fri there are free family concerts at the Shelter Cove pavillion by Shannon Tanner. Tuesday nights also offer fireworks thru the summer.

Enjoy! :)

We have not stayed there yet, but just stayed across the street at the Marriott in May. I think you could walk to the beach, but it is a pretty far walk, especially if you were to be carrying beach items. Our hotel was one hotel down from the Disney beach property, and we rode our bikes over to look at the Disney hotel. It looked great - we can't wait to stay there.

I would say it is not within walking distance, but can definitely be biked. I think it is about 1.5 miles, so it's about a 15-20 minute walk. When are you going? In winter it would be a pleasant walk, but in summer it might be a little sticky.

I thought it was a long distance on a bike! :scared1: The next day we drove. :rotfl2: Maybe I'm out of shape. :rolleyes1 Actually, it's really not too far, but it would take a while to walk. Biking is probably a better option than walking.

I would not want to walk it; it's nice and hot this time of year.
You can bike it but the shuttle is fast and relaxing.

Are you going with children? When we went with our kiddos we practically just stayed at the resort. We did the campfire sing along, snowball fight (wadded up socks), crafts and (gross) dissected owl pellets. My kids had so much fun at their pool. The beach is nice though. The beachhouse has a pool, small arcade and clubhouse/restaraunt (if I remember the restaraunt correctly). Like I said we practically stayed at the resort.

I would not recommend walking - it can be done, but it is a rather long way especially with all that beach gear and kids. We drove when we were there, no problems parking the car at the beach house.
We fell in love:love:with HHI - I'm sure you'll have a blast! We can't wait to go back.

Just came back from a week long trip to HHI and although it's possible to walk to the beach from the resort, did not see anyone attempt this feat. Since most people have beach gears to tote, most either took advantage of the Disney shuttle or drove their cars to the Beach House. If you do drive, try to get there by 11:00am at the latest. The parking lot gets full by lunch time.
By the way, I can't say enough good things to say about this place. Others have said this bizillion times but the cast members are the BEST here bar none. I did get to know few of them myself but they go out of their ways to make your kids special. These guys work hard all day and still keep smiling all day long.

We want to go next summer and plan to take our bikes. Are the paths well lit. What about "biting" bugs?

The beach house at Disney's HHI resort closes before dark iirc. As far as other bike paths around the island I honestly can't say I recall seeing many if any bikers when it is full dark, but then again I may not have really been taking notice. Many stretches of road are dimly lit if at all - - jmho I'd describe HHI as more 'rural' in atmosphere then a bright lights vacation destination . I'm sure others will be along to post here who can give you better description & details on bike paths after dark.

:goodvibes

The paths within and around DVC are lit and so is the marina bordering the resort but the island paths are not lit except for some intersections.
Bring those handlebar mounted lights if you plan on riding after hours.

The bugs in the summer bite in the morning and as the sun sets. They siesta during the hottest part of the day!

Butting in on this thread - how is it at Hilton Head in March? We are considering either Vero or HH for our Ontario March break next year - we are a family of 4 including 2 boys almost 16yo and 10yo and like to golf. None of the 'guys' in my life do well sitting around doing nothing so if we stayed for a Sun to Friday stay I would have to have plenty to keep them busy. I noticed it seems to be a 'low' season there in March.

how is the weather in March (we ARE from Ontario so anything better then -10C would be a plus!!:lmao:) Warm enough for swimming?

We love VERO, in our opinion no place better. We are looking at HH just for something different.

At any rate we have spent the last 9 years at Vero for our spring break. The pool is heated so the swimming is great if you don't mind a little air. Sometimes the air temp can make it seem cold. My husband loves the golf in Sebastian. It will be way cheaper in Florida than in HH. You can get a nice tan during this time of year. I'd be a bit concerned at HH that it would be too cool.

Good luck. I still haven't gotten a response about my original request. I did learn that there are only 6 grand villas which I think is going to make it difficulut for us to get in there. But hopefully come December we can at least get two 2bdrm and 1 studio.

We've been several times in March, and although the weather isn't warm enough for us to swim, it might be for you Canadians. We're used to summers with temperatures over 100 degrees F (about 32 degrees C) In March, it's mid 60s F (about 18 C).

We've gone to HH in March a number of times over the years. While the ocean will likely still be a little too cool to enjoy swimming (60's), the resort pools are heated. Air temps will typically range from mid-60s to upper 70's. We were there this April and the ocean temp was in the low 70's - warm enough for a brief swim.

There are a number of golf courses near the resort, so golfing won't be a problem. The resort has a variety of activities for all ages and there are plenty of water-related things to do (shelling, crabbing, Dolphin watch tours, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, sailing) - many right from the resort and others from the Shelter Cove marina bordering the resort. The resort also has activities for teenagers and there will be a lot of other families there at that time too.

Have a great trip! :)

Thanks - perhaps I'll stick with Vero/Disney split for March and do HH in May - mid 60's is even too cool for me to swim - just got back from a cruise to Alaska where it was mostly mid 60's and didn't swim even once!!

Thanks!
